We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Rauner has it wrong. Republicans do not want to "kill unions." They do want to tame or, ideally, eliminate government unions. Government's relationship with government unions is corrupt by definition, incestuous.
Yep. I'd like to see the ILWU hobbled. Otherwise, just the SEIU and AFSCME gummint employee unions,. already protected by civil service, to cut the automatic dues-paying funneled into Dem campaign funds.
We won't get a handle on the various govt employee pension problems until we reduce the power of public unions to elect the people they will be negotiating with.
A couple of decades ago the teachers in a very upscale Chicago suburb went out on strike for the usual -- higher pay, more perks, better pensions, less work, whatever -- then some dastardly type 'leaked' how much each teacher go paid and how many of them were married to other teachers and what they got paid. Strike collapsed in about two days.
I guess freedom of association means nothing to the left. The subtext is of course, that unions have been a potent source of power for the left. The fact that in some states (thankfully fewer each year) a person must join a union to hold certain jobs whether he wants to join it or not and that unions use dues money for political purposes the union member may not approve of just fits the left's agenda of controlling as many people as possible to amass more power over them.
The author makes a big stink about Scott Walker raising "outside money" to counter recall elections that were partially about rolling back his "anti-union" moves. But "outside money" is a hallmark of Demoncrat money. In NC, it is quite common for Hollywood and other out of state organizations to be major donors of Demoncrat politicians. Then he complains that the Illinois governor used executive action because he had a Demoncrat house and senate. Shades of Obummer. Somehow I doubt he was as scandalized by Obummer recent executive action on immigration or even the dozens of changes to Obummercar.
There is just no hypocrite like a lefty hypocrite.
