Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

California Oysters: A case study in politics, policy, and environmental protection

The Oyster Shell Game:



 After seven years of political and legal battles that have grown into one of the ugliest environmental fights in the country, this was the end of the line for Lunny’s oyster farm. "It's been a terrible time," said Lunny, who still lives on the nearby cattle ranch where he grew up and where his grandfather started a dairy farm in 1947. The forced closure of the oyster company marks the end, after almost 80 years, of modern shellfish farming in Drakes Estero, the tidal estuary that lies at the center of the dispute...

This must be what, the thousandth story like this over the last ten years? Either the politics change or call me when one of these stories ends with an appearance

Down my way I've seen State and Federal Government shut down generations old fishing boats, including those day boats that feature guys wearing funny hats that only want to dip a line in the water and bring home a couple of pounds of fish for the skillet. In the same time frame I've seen European based draggers come into an estuary and clean out every blue mussel in a week. Leaving nothing to reseed. And in both cases the people doing wrong were protected by the authorities.

Too much government, you think?

Not only too much but dishonest, too. I guess it could happen that a Pubbie senator could fight with a Pubbie administration over their efforts to put somebody out of business because of one regulation or another, but regulations are the major product of this administration and Senator DiFi (as much as she is the most grownup of California Senators and many Demoncrat Senators - a very low bar) has been a strong supporter of this administration and now she's finding out what that means on a more personal level. What she probably doesn't understand is that this is only a minor result of the lunacy of this administration.

Article didn't tell the whole story of how this property became Federal property. The oyster people got into bed with the Federal government & woke up with an STD. Look it up.

The bay there is lined with oyster shacks offering BBQ oysters fresh from the bay.

Wonder if they will survive now.

It is pretty cool to drive along the left coast and stop at the little remote bays to see the seals. But I gotta tell you there is no shortage of seals and sea lions. The crazy environmentalists would have you believe that they are "endangered" but they are not. The smal boat harbors along the coast are literally being invaded by them. Small boats are swamped and fouled with their waste as the sea lions heave themselves onto the decks. Something is radically wrong with the story or the data or the effort. There are seemingly more pinnipeds then ever before. They are more common in California than illegal aliens.

It is a fundamental liberal tenet that powerful government = beneficial government. Human history demonstrates the opposite: powerful government = unaccountable government, which becomes increasingly arbitrary and capricious, often even corrupt as unaccountability leads to bribes.
