Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Some math or physics paper in the 70s by an active math or physics guy was published in Latin. I may have it upstairs somewhere.
I'm surprised I haven't seen anything here about Brian Williams - unless I missed it. Apparently his helicopter incident was the tip of the iceberg.
Oops - I did miss it - just saw the link to a Rush Limbaugh article.
Williams also said that he saw bodies floating in the French Quarter after Hurricane Katrina. That is "highly unlikely" since the French Quarter didn't flood.
Jindal to Obama: ‘Medieval Christian Threat is Under Control’
Just saw that over at NRO. He continues his statement suggesting Obama look to the current and active threat of radical Islam. But really, it is the perfect response. And by all indications, the current Pope is not likely to go all Medieval. Re: Brian Williams. How much of his life and reporting is make believe? We are supposed to believe his "journalism", now that we find that he is just pretending to be a reporter? He is just like a hollyweird actor, pretending for a living.
What's curious to me is that nobody at NBC said anything about his lie about his helicopter story. That made me wonder if there was some sort of conspiracy that came from NBC itself. Then we see that he talked about bodies floating past his hotel room in the French Quarter after Katrina. Certainly, NBC news knew that the French Quarter didn't flood, didn't they?
If Williams's head is to roll, there should be a lot more that roll with his. But that's not going to happen. This is the news department that has lied for years - from GM trucks to George Zimmerman and now to Brian Williams. Tom Brokaw may not have lied but he ignored plenty of news. From the Chinese Funny Money scandal during Clinton's second presidential election to his discussion with Charlie Rose a few days before Obummer's first election where they opined that they really didn't know anything about Obummer. Rush is right, they are not journalists. They are not even news readers, they are narrative readers. "Who really owns our body?"
I am sympathetic to this arguement. I want smaller government and more freedom. But where to start? Certainly there is zero arguement that anyone can make that seatbelts, life jackets or motorcycle helmet are necessary for the betterment of society. My seatbelt or my motorcycle helmet can only save me. So lets get behind repealing all the laws that are not intended to benefit all of society but are nothing more than sticking the governments nose into private lives. Then the question is can the government force me to put a seatbelt, a helmet or a life jacket on my children? This gets right to the meat of the problem. Can the government force me to protect my children? Haven't even touched the more complex issue of can the government force me to protect all of society. You would have to look for a long time to find someone who believes we should all be allowed to drive around without seatbelts and car seats for our children. So I come back to the question; who owns our body? It's not black and white it's grey. Some things make so much sense that it would be foolish and criminal to not take those steps to insure the safety of innocent people. So lets agree that you as an adutl can choose to not wear seat belts or helmets or life jackets but everyone under the age of 18 must and to not do so would be punishable. That probably wouldn't get you an arguement with most people. So now we come to vaccinations. Should a parent be able to refuse to vaccinate their child against really dangerous childhood diseases? Clearly by the same standard that we require seatbelts the answer must be "no! But there is an additional factor as well; that vaccinations not only protect those who get them but protect innocent potential victims who for various legitimate reasons cannot undergo a vaccination. The answer when it comes to vaccinations is in fact a double "no!". In a modern society vaccinations are and shoud be mandatory. The solution is simple. Segregate all children who are not vaccinated and don't have an allergy to preclude vaccination into a separate student body. Then let nature take its course.
The Amish and many Mennonites separate themselves from the English socially but mix with the general population in many other ways. The Amish are vaccine avoiders yet I don't observe any danger they have become to the rest of the population. Now trod in the wrong areas of Detroit, St. Louis or numerous other blue cities and see what the danger is to yourself. But the war on poverty certainly continues. The non vaccinated are the least of your problems. How well did the CDC and government in general handle Ebola and where is the Ebola czar or any current information on the Ebola outbreak? The government and especially this administration can not be trusted on ANY medical issue. Since the mid 60's and the growth of the nanny state there is no area they will not seek mandates. Neither light bulbs, toilets, nor mileage standards are beyond their meddling. How many people die from the results of those Café standards. I reside in flyover country and am done with marching to the tune of big brother. I will "wrench" every effort made to regulate my liberty. That includes the rino efforts.
I am not unsympathetic to many of your points. But when it comes to vaccinations I do disagree. It is not the same thing as Ebola was. It is not like the low flush toilet. And I'm not sure that the Amish are free of illnesses or have never infected anyone else. That is one of those things that they probably don't talk about.
Vaccines and the effect they have had on humans is the biggest story of the 20th century. WW II caused the deaths of between 50 million and 100 million people and vaccines is a bigger story then even that. Vaccines have saved more lives then all the wars in the 20th century took. Vaccines work extremely well. You will hear, from the antivaxers, that vaccines "cause" health problems and even deaths but in general this isn't true. In those rare, very rare cases when there is an apparent reaction to the vaccine it isn't the vaccine that poisoned or sickened the individual it is that individual's own health and immune system that is at fault. Just as eating peanuts doesn't arbitrarily randomly kill or injure one person in 100,000 vaccines don't randomly injure one in a million. There is an allergy or an immune system problem or some other medical condition that the person has that causes a reaction. To some this point does not matter. I get that. If you or a loved one is one of those people with an undiagnosed immune system problem and the vaccine triggers a reaction you don't care that it isn't the vaccines fault. You don't care that almost any medical treatment, even a common blood test might trigger the same response. To you it is the vaccine. I can't change the fact that 1 in a million might have a reaction or 1 in 20 million might die after a vaccination. All anyone can hope to do is understand it and explain it. But make no mistake, that is NOT what the antivaxers are doing and not what the predatory quacks and self styled guru's of natural health are doing. They are lying, exaggerating, dissimulating and scare mongering. Not for the good of mankind but for fame, notoriety, to sell products of their own or to facillitate ambulance chasers. They weave an appealing story, they seduce the innocent and ignorant and they even tempt the people who should now better. But they are wrong. Some decry how many people are alive. Before vaccines nature took its course and we arrived here where some decry how there are too many people. If kids are vaccinated aren't they then protected from the unvaccinated or just what is the vaccine protecting them from? And why be age-ist. Why are children more special than another human, let's make all get vaccinated. But why, asks PETA, are humans more important, let's make all animals get vaccinated. With our government, nature is the last thing we have to worry about. Read the link where the architect of ObamaCare wants to tax the obese. Some say that is worse than smoking for your health. Will we soon have to post signs that no fat people are to stand closer than 8 feet to doors? Okay, I admit, I rambled. But I am a victim and due some sort of compensation, I am sure.
Schools have not changed much since "Little House On The Prairie."
Kids are being taught to live in the 1950's It's a shame they aren't taught as well as they were in the 1950s though!
I expect we could get by if kids were taught as The Barrister related of his prep school experience. But then, they took a student getting an A as a sign they weren't being pushed hard enough.
Today, we have a common core established for no more than the average student and laws against pushing them that can to higher standards. Journalism consists of slanting the news towards soap opera, lest their core viewers tune away.
That's all there is to it. I think that Williams should stay right where he is. Better that their top representative is a known liar than someone who they can pretend is not.
Williams: See: http://www.gocomics.com/that-is-priceless/ for a take on this.
Science: When I majored in Physics way back when, I studied German because a lot of Physics was done by German speakers. Duggars: Libs don't like diversity in sex; perversity is favored. OK, there's a LOT of diversity lefties don't like. Tax by weight: Is this surprising? I think not; lefties loooooooooove taxes. Vaccines and Science: Conservatives learn from the experience of others; libs (if they do) mostly by personal experience. Food Fetish: ... “could you put the dressing on the side?” ... is a Problem? Deciding how much dressing one wants might indicate a problem if it's a whole bottle/jar; otherwise, I think not. Kerry the worst: We'd like to think so, but I read elsewhere the question was "Who's the best?", and Kerry tied for fewest votes. Forget about Beanie Babies. What about my POG collection? And how much longer do I have to keep that Tamagotchi alive?
RE: BRIAN WILLIAMS (if that's his real name)
Why should it be a surprise to find that a leftist lies? As was made clear in "Primary Colors", leftist politicians and their supporters (the main stream media) truly believe that lies are acceptable - if not necessary - as long as they advance the left wing agenda and narrative. The left wing media will do anything and everything to prop up leftist politicians like Obama and the Clintons. Will Brian Williams get canned? I think it all boils down to what the left wing media feels will help them sell Obama and Clinton. Yesterday, we heard Tom Brokaw call for Williams' dismissal. This is the same Tom Brokaw who glossed over Obama's scandals and lies with the claim the Watergate was worse (when in fact, it wasn't) while ignoring the fact that Nixon was forced to resign (in part by media attacks) while Obama has gone unscathed by the press. This is the same Tom Brokaw who expediently downplayed and glossed over Bill Clinton's lies (including perjury) which he evidently finds more acceptable than the false braggadocio of one of his colleagues. If the left wing media feels that firing Williams will enhance their credibility in terms of helping to further Obama's agenda and (more importantly) elect another Marxist in 2016, he's toast. Otherwise, they will paint this as simply a mistake or slip of the tongue - i.e. "he misspoke" - rather than the deliberate lie that it was. From Legal Insurrection:
