Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, January 27. 2015Imaginary "blizzard of the century" fizzles, plus Tuesday morning linksWasn't even a storm, much less a blizzard - just an ordinary New England winter snow dump. No ferocious winds, no 2-3 feet of snow. No big deal, a nice treat for the ski areas but a bummer for those with flights planned. I had supposed that the weather wasn't being over-hyped this time. Fooled again: Millions hunker down as Northeast storm was downgraded to "snowy day". Who do you blame for all the stormophobia these days? Drudge? Weather Channel? What? The pols over-hype these things so they won't be caught being wrong. The news over-hypes them so you will keep your TV and radio turned on. Of course it does make sense to try to keep drivers off the roads for a few hours with big snows so the plows can do their work efficiently. The driving is fine out there this morning. Everybody without a government job is going to work this morning. Is Climate Change To Blame for the Northeast Snow Storm? Good grief, Charlie Brown. Hllary's problem isn't just that she isn't exciting, it's that she has failed at every one of those jobs on her "impressive" resume.
She was a dishonest doormat of a First Lady, an invisible Senator, and one of the worst Secretary of States in history. And a terrible campaigner in 08. It's also good to know that when one grows weary of all the windmills and solar farms the Greens are planning to build down here we can lie back and imagine the unspoiled Alaskan wilderness we aren't allowed to visit.
What really hurts is that the area in play was originally set aside by Congress to be used for exploitation of natural resources. The money from that was to pay for ANWR's upkeep.
Kinda like getting our money back from selling Iraqi oil and all the green jobs that were to be headed our way. Re: Gruber
So Gruber obfuscated to get his bill passed, then he lied about it, and now he might have cheated his clients? The evidence piles up that he actually was the architect of ObummerCare that he claimed to be. This Maine-based reader disagrees with your assessment of the storm. It's a blizzard here!
I live within sight of Rte 28 in NH; beyond the plows, there wasn't much public traffic until after noon.
Re: Artists fearing their audience
I find it interesting how the Iowa reacted to the paper mache sculpture of the Klan figure made of images of news paper pages reporting on racial violence. The Klan was still active when I was growing up, I remember the marches, the segregation, the hate. But these kids did not. Yet I saw sculpture as an obvious statement that the sentiments of the Klan were evil. These kids saw the opposite. This makes me fearful for our future. Kids today don't seem to recognize true evil and worse, they try to see evil where it doesn't exist. Whenever I read about a contractor faking his invoices, I always wonder where are those stalwart defenders of the tax payer dollars we elected.
The ruthless consumer, lets see how cheap gas affects electric cars and the inevitable reaction of the our best and brightest. The death test looks interesting, there is a time to say when you're only prolonging the agony. Lets hope when the snow settles, people will realize disaster preparedness means more than having a flashlight handy. "Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission Looking Into 2008 Meltdown Exposed as Sham"
"...the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and other federal agencies pushed the housing market over the subprime cliff." This is the truth about the great crash. The Dems and the MSM covered it up as best they could but many knew this al along. There were videos on youtube showing Republicans testifying before congress that HUDs policies would cause a crash and Democrat lawmakers going "road rage" at being called out in congress. There is another interesting wrinkle of this story. Not only did the government coverup the real cause and blame the banks but then it took the banks to court with trumped up charges and extorted billions from them. But it is what they did with those billions that is the dirty story: They gave the money to left wing organizations like ACORN and others to do things that could only be done in the shadows. Like signing up illegal aliens to vote and relocating Democrat voters to areas that were Republican. The dirt and criminal conspiracy goes much deeper then the article exposed. Yeah, we saw this first hand at Bank of America, which was operating on the first floor of our building. They started getting all the "community activists" protesting, demanding the Bank make bad loans to minorities and give them all sorts of free stuff. This was in connection with the feds having to approve any new bank locations, and the activists were using that process to blackmail the banks. So we'd get to walk through the protestors going to work in the morning, who were all holding up neatly manufactured signs and yelling at how the bank was racist and discriminatory.
BOA finally got so disgusted with what they were facing in our state in terms of being double-teamed by the Democrats and the manufactured activists that they shut down and stopped doing business here. For an amusing read, try the reviews of the new book "Hidden in Plain Sight" on Amazon. About a third of the reviewers have read the book; their reviews are almost 100% 5-star. About two-thirds have not read it and have posted 1-star reviews, normally of about one line, saying something like "I can't believe someone wrote this trash." It's a pretty well organized hit squad, except for the extreme brevity and non-substantive nature of the comments. At least they don't all repeat the same canned phrase.
I did that. The one-star reviews were written less than two days after the book was published. You know they didn't read it.
Re school student spending
Washington DC spends twice as much per student as Mississippi but has the same test scores as Mississippi students. School spending has nothing to do with student performance. re blizzard
It is interesting that we don't understand weather well enough for an accurate forecast 12 hours in advance, but we understand climate well enough that the warming forecasts are a stone dead certainty. I would think one would have to understand weather before one could understand climate. Oh well. I guess its all too complex for my feeble mind to comprehend. RE: Student activists
For me the real question is who organizes these gals? Who is working on a campus near you to agitate this extremism? Does anyone ever ask why a group of women in Iowa suddenly start yelling and screaming the same demands as a student group in Massachusetts? Especially when there is no "incident" in Iowa? Who are these gals that think of themselves as "agents of change"? Single women, usually mid forties to retirement age. Typically working in tenured faculty positions, but also in support positions on campus, i.e., the disabled services office, or the retarded students office, etc. Why do we never confront them by name and in public? Why should they be allowed to slither away and wait until dark? ho hum, ho hum. A while back we were acquainted with a nice young professor from Scandinavia. Very polite, very considerate AND very rational, and well trained in the Socratic method.
He taught in a Master's degree course; most of the students were middle aged women in management. In his last speech to the class the end of the school year he reminded the students of what subjects had been covered, what they had learned and the questions that each would still need to answer for themselves. OH BOY at that point the poop hit the fan. The women started screaming pig; their claim was that he maintained his dominant position over them when he sent them out into the world "not having all the answers!" How dare he!! Not to worry--some of these gals and the women who "mentored' them are the same animals who put Obama in the WH! KFC: The HORROR, the horror, of selling something people might like to eat (If It Ain't FRIED, It Ain't FOOD!) They won't eat one every day. Prolly not more than 2 a week.
