We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Well, to give credit where credit is due, they did their best to legislate our defeat in Iraq. Remember Harry Reid trying to surrender to al Qaeda after a particularly bad car bombing? Makes me pine for the good old days hanging, drawing and quartering traitors.
I always wondered why Democrats like Kennedy and LBJ got the war started if they didn't want to win it. If FDR lost the election in '44 would Democrats have tried to lose that war out of spite?
Or, did the Democrats slide that far to the left between '64 and '74 that they wanted the Communists to win?
Having been raised by a well educated Viet Nam vet Marine I am very much aware of these facts, but the man makes the points very concisely and in a way that is easy for anyone to understand (if they care to). Sadly, most people base their opinions of the war on nothing more than pop culture.
Much has been made of Michelle Obama's "the first time I was proud of my country" statement, the double cross by Congress was my first ashamed of my country moment. I couldn't believe what I was reading and watching on the evening news, it has colored my world view ever since and is the source of my disgust and contempt for our "leaders".
This came a decade and a half later, but is in the same vein.
QUOTE:
After the fall of Communism, everybody in the world agreed that socialism was a failure. Everybody in the world, more or less, agreed that capitalism was a success. And every capitalist country in the world apparently deduced from that that what the West needed was more socialism.
-Milton Friedman, 1993
It would be nice to blame this solely on the Democrats but the Republican establishment did nothing as their fellow travelers facilitated the murder of the South Vietnamese. Ivy Leaguers almost to the man and woman, not worthy of standing on American soil.

Yes.

The Democrats were responsible for cutting funds the last year. Even the NVA stated that Thieu was forced to fight a poor man's war, but there is ample room to blame all.

The U.S. could have won that war after the Tet offensive in January 1968
It was essentially won after that.
"After TET '68, I could drive from Tu Duc six days a week to Pho Loi leaving at five in the morning when it was dark with never a problem. The few Viet Cong left resorted to stealing chickens at night which quite often left them dead by the side of the road in the mornings. From then on the North Vietnamese main army had to shoulder the burden."

I highly recommend the entire series at Prager University.
The Democrats fight for power. Nixon ended the war and got the NVietnamese to agree to a peaceful end. The Democrats could not let that stand. Nixon had to be destroyed and South Vietnam had to be sacrificed. There were presidents to be elected and pork to be traded for votes. What was a few million Vietnamese lives in comparison to electing Carter? The Democrats will still sacrifice our friends and allies and even our own people to win elections. Do you think these 20-30 million illegal aliens are not going to vote Democrat AND do you think they will not all need welfare? The Democrats are about to take control for the next 100 years if we last that long. This was/is a big stakes game and the Republicans are playing nickle dime poker.
Did someone forget that the South Vietnamese government was corrupt beyond belief( just like Afghanistan). Did someone forget that U.S. forces couldn't train a decent South Vietnamese army because the people just didn't give a damn. Did someone forget .................??
As do you, BT, I question whether Mike Shaw was there. Did I see corrupt ARVN? Sure. Did I see 'em throw down their weapons and run? Nah.
