We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
With the new year California has big new taxes to fight AGW. But of course the huge amount of money these taxes generate don't fund any real effort against AGW the money is used in the same way politicians have always used money; to fund their reelection and pay off their cronies.
The new dietary guidelines will begin as "suggestions" and then become mandatory with... wait for it... Huge taxes to push everyone into abiding by the "guidelines". The huge tranche of money these new taxes create won't be used to "improve" anything except the politicians chances of getting reelected and their supporters chances of getting nice government contracts. Have you noticed how the government solution to every problem is either a tax or a fine? Why is it the solution is never reducing or eliminating a tax or fine?
>>Why is it the solution is never reducing or eliminating a tax or fine?
Exactly. When found in noncompliance, businesses are fined excessive amounts leading many to close or declare bankruptcy. Or quit in exhaustion. HALTING the revenue source TO the offending agency, and tax collectors.
We were just talking about this morning. Regulatory agencies overlap and give contradictory "advice" --ensuring everyone is in noncompliance somewhere.
The federal motor carrier's "safety" admin is a great example. Older truckers are quitting left and right, because DOT agents are like TSA agents. With guns.
PJ Tatler did a good job of breaking down the arguments being made by a MZ. Tanya Cohen. However, what I find more interesting is the collective site upon which this piece was published. Take a look at your future leaders by doing a quick perusal of their talented contributions, etc., ad nauseum:
