We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I was a frequent visitor to Holland Island (#20) in the mid 1960s and stayed many times in the house shown in the photo. It was owned by the Salisbury, MD family of my school roommate. We would drive to Deal Island and head to the island by boat. It was charmingly raffish and fun there, and their cook would go along. From her I learned about really, really regional cooking (including 'skrat, squirrel and so forth), something, um, unappreciated at home. Later a minister bought the island from the family, and he tried to save it at huge cost. I understand that there is nothing left of the island at this point.
I grew up in New Mexico and remember when I 40 replaced Route 66. Tucumcari, NM is still alive and well. When I 40 bypassed the town, the businesses just moved out around the new I 40. Many downtown businesses were simply abandoned.
