We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Annals of government medical care

In the UK, docs must now report weight-gainers to the government. 


Is that the first step towards making being fat a crime? That's a country in which it is now a crime to put your garbage in the wrong bin. That is not from a Monty Python skit.


We always figure that if you get fat and die young, you save money for the government. So why not encourage obesity? America does, by asking people to eat carbs as a diet despite sedentary lives.

The route to power, sociologist Joseph Gussfield has discovered, is discover a new "public problem" and take ownership of it.

The three biggies since the 50s are drunk driving, child abuse and dangerous dogs.

The former two were mere personal moral failings, and the latter a nuisance taken care of only for problem dogs without further ado.

Public problems are now the method of bureaucracy, not just interest groups.

Of MADD, my friend Fred Grampp said that if it weren't for the drunks, most of them wouldn't be mothers. That's the right attitude.

My insurer now requires a yearly weigh in, blood work and effort to lose weight else a fat boy premium kicks in (in addition to the $50/month for tobacco use). So, no surprizing the NHS does this.

In the future, look forward to being fitted with gadget that lets the insurers set premiums based on the read out like is done for cars now.

Coercive medicine has arrive here in the form of "accountable care" in which doctors are paid more if their patients follow orders. I never go to a doctor if at all possible.
