We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
That's wrong. California has only defined nearly half of all sex as rape. Otherwise, men would be included in the rape statistics. As it is, only the female half of a sexual encounter can experience rape.
I've tried to convince a friend that Dr Oz, like any other "advice giver", can't be right all the time (a statistical thing). None of us can be right all the time.
My friend continues on with considerable ignorance.
I continue on and consider my ignorance.
The French soldier's view of the American soldier was truly inspiring and heart warming. He hopes that he and his soldiers remain worthy of the US soldier. I hope we citizens are worthy of them as well.
Re; Dr Oz and alternative and complimentary medicine.
Most if not all of the advice and information is pure superstition and mysticism. Much of it is probably harmless and yet some of it is clearly harmful. But even that misses the point which is if a person has a health problem and seeks out the witch doctors of CAM instead of science based health care then they are allowing their health problems to progress without proper care. That is even a "harmless" treatment for a real health problem can be harmful and even deadly. The ability and probability for CAM to cause harm is real and should be dealt with by congress and the FDA and CDC. At the least they should require that any medicine, supplement, or treatment that the proponents of CAM advocate receive the same rigorous testing and trials that science based medicines and treatment are required to meet. Either the prescriptions and treatments can be proven to be of benefit or they cannot and the American public deserves to know this so that they are making intelligent informed health care decisions.
I wonder what Louis Zamperini, a survivor of his B-24 being shot up over the Pacific, ditching another B-24 in the Pacific and floating for a couple of months, making landfall only to be captured by the Japanese followed by years in prison camps, and a near fatal post-war war with demon rum, would think if he could read today's posting of the things that are bothering Americans these days.
I read “Unbroken” some years ago. I do not anticipate liking the visual dramatization of the years of abuse and torture. I was prepared to see the movie, but to learn the movie has omitted his recovery from WW2 is disheartening.
