We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

One of the reasons China is growing so much is because they have a huge population. In the mean time, our birth rate is declining. That fact is the only argument for massive immigration and amnesty that seems so popular in DC. But another reason China has grown so much is that they value actual education (especially technical) and hard work. That being the case, it makes more sense to welcome scientists and engineers rather than gardeners and construction workers.

Becoming number two was inevitable. At one point after WWII, the US GNP was half the world's GNP. I remember many years ago, it being reported with some trepidation that that ratio was declining.

China's growth is built on a very shaky foundation of debt and government (mis)management. It will stumble at some point and it will likely stumble hard. The problem for us is that lately our economic foundation isn't that much different from China's.

Activist "Science" is a proven strategy to advance an agenda. Argue a substance should be banned, then manufacture a 'study' to 'prove' it. The strategy has worked very well for the global warming activists. Why not in this case as well?

Any time a study is published, the credentials and the bios of the authors needs to be thoroughly checked. It is sad that this is the case but there is too much pseudo science out there to do otherwise.

China's hypersonic strike missile is a game changer. It could singlehandedly take out our entire navy in the event of a serious confrontation with China. There is no defense against them and for a few millions of dollars it would be possible to eliminate an entire carrier fleet (except the subs) in minutes. This is not being highlighted for what it really is and that is a complete and total negation of our navy by China. If they ever use these against us, and I believe they will to take back Taiwan, they will force us to use nuclear weapons or surrender. This makes the Cuba missile crisis look like a picnic.
