Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

RE: Morning Joe
I agree that the allegations made by the racialists is a bridge too far for most people; it smacks of the little boy who cried wolf, and I even have some sympathy for minorities, of any status, who are leery of the police. How emotionally and mentally inadequate do you have to be to expect the public to buy into claims that defy the laws of nature and physics. Maybe there is something to the assertion that this is a power struggle for Dem party. As for shooting an attacker in the legs:
First, Brown was shot several times in the arm and it did not materially stop his attack. Second, the extremities, especially below the knee or elbow have a wide range of motion and the class 3 lever created by knee or elbow is designed for speed not multiplying the amount of force that can be applied. So now you are trying to hit something that can move in many directions very fast. But most importantly, if you feel you have the time to shoot to purposely inflict a light wound, then good luck proving a reasonable belief of an imminent threat. Or the reasonable belief of a threat of death or serious bodily injury. Or that the use of deadly force, a firearm, was proportional to the threat. And that means good luck convince a jury, grand or trial that you acted in lawful self defense and didn't commit assault with a deadly weapon. Muslems discovered the earth was round over 500 years before they discovered Islam apparently.
Eratosthenes, an Athenian Greek, knew the Earth was round in the third century B.C., and calculated its diameter with surprising accuracy.
Regarding vaccinations, I'm opposed to requiring them for anything. I vaccinated my kids, so anyone else who isn't going to vaccinate poses no threat to me or mine.
If they believe in that nonsense about autism, or avoiding some kind of other issue, let them run the risk of having kids who are crippled for life or die. It's a shame there's so much misinformation regarding vaccinations out there. It's not too dissimilar from the point in time they were first introduced. James Gillray's cartoon sums up the misinformation of that era: http://open.jorum.ac.uk/xmlui/bitstream/handle/10949/946/Items/S320_1_section3.html It's not so different today, though you'd hope it would be. Indeed Bulldog. That cartoon was in my 8th grade science book, and I think of it every time I hear of people being afraid of vaccinations.
It's remarkable that our ability to assess risk has changed so little over the centuries. Anyone who has ever practiced on the range with a semi, or fully automatic pistol knows that the track of bullets entering the guys bottom is an accidental pull/hold. The first shot entering the body was down low and the track up the body is classic "mistake" pattern, with the gun and pattern pulling upward. I don't listen to the demands of the black community anymore. We have tried for 50 years to make things right. During those fifty years they have . . .screw em!

"FDA Plan to Make Americans Slimmer Will Reduce Fresh Food Options "
I cannot believe that this is intended to help people lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. It is such a misguided idea that will not work and they must know this. Everyone who is grossely overweight has a genetic problem that no amount of calorie information can cure. Many of us are moderately overweight but that does not equate to unhealthy and in fact may be more healthy then the BMI guidelines are for "normal" weight. The sad truth is that people who are obese cannot easily lose weight through dieting and when they do lose weight cannot in most cases maintain that lower weight. Their body will work against them in an effort to maintain that weight that their genes demand. For the vast majority of us who are moderately overweight or who would just like to be thin calorie counting or other fad diets can usually achieve this but the results are generally short term. But the important point is that in these cases it isn't about being more healthy it is usually about ego and the desire to look better. It is simply incorrect that being 10 or 15 lbs overweight is unhealthy. A person may be unhealthy for other reasons and losing weight may be a desireable treatment but in general 10 to 15 extra lbs on a healthy adult is not a health problem. The bottom line is that most of us will ignore the information these new guidelines are supposed to provide us and it won't matter one way or the other. The minority of us who are fighting obesity will closely read the information these new guidelines provide but it won't matter one way or the other. I've been 15 lbs up and down in the 20 years since I turned 65. One thing I've noticed is that the wrinkles and sags are far less apparent when my weight is up.

RE: The law is a drag. A perfect summary of the last six years. Well worth the time it takes to read.
Ferguson and the calculated manipulation of the situation by Obama, Holder, Sharpton and the other race baiters and the media have shown the real race problem in America. And it doesn't have anything to do with whites.
"Economic Fact of the Day. For every $100 in sales, the average discount retailer like Walmart and Target earns $3.10 in profits"
The one that gets me are the gas taxes. Pennsylvania has a 40.7 cent per gallon tax on every gallon that is sold. Can you imagine if the evil, horrible, Exxon/Mobile made 40.7 cents per gallon in profit. Think of the money that pours into Harrisburg from this tax. It is supposed to be used to fix the roads - but for some reason they are always complaining that they have no money - and our roads and bridges are horrible. Oh - well - I'm sure the government run health care will be much better . . . Re: NYT Propagandist
I'm so distraught that the reporter who published Daren Wilson's address had her address published! Why, that's just not fair. Wilson's address will get a lot more publicity. On the other hand, hers will attract a better class of antagonist. |
