We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I don't count Juan as much of a doctrinaire leftie as many and I think it's a credit to him that he and Justice Thomas are good friends, but he is a punching bag most of the time. I used to love when Hume would school him!
It has been observed again and again by thinkers on the Right that lefties view Government as the supreme good, all giving and all knowing entity, ie their God. So it stands to reason that they would give thanks to Government for all the bounty it has blessed them with on Thanksgiving.
Juan is a nice enough guy and he isn't always so obtuse. But he is a victim of his underlying philosophy and his upbringing. I think in his heart he believes that the policeman in Ferguson stopped the unarmed gentle teenager simply because he was black. The concept that the policeman might have stopped him because he fit the description of the strong arm robber to a "T" is foriegn to him. Then I suspect Juan knows that the gentle unarmed teen beat the officer relentlessly and even tried to take his gun until the officer was able to bring his gun into play to end the beating. But again Juan thinks that especialy because this gentle teenager was black that shooting him under any circumstances was racist and uncalled for. Finally Juan believes that when the officer tried to stop the gentle giant from escaping and the unarmed teen threatened the officer and then charged the officer intent on doing serious bodily harm that there was still no call for the white policeman to shoot in self defense and should have simply absorbed a brutal beating from this gentle unarmed teen. Because of Juan's race and because of his belief system he cannot look at this incident any other way. This is how people see things through the lense of their biases and prejudices. Ironically, if Michael Brown had held up his hands he would be very much alive today and no doubt given lenient treatment by the courts for his crimes. Brown didn't have to die but he did choose to die.
