Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Celebrate same sex marriages or go to jail (does that apply to Muslims, too?)
Yes it will apply to Muslims. The people to be married will have to survive the beheading first. Wait till you tell the Muslim "ministers" they must be priests or ministers of the gospel (lowercase) to solemnize a marriage in Idaho.
Besides various civil and Idaho Indian officials to solemnize a marriage a person must be "...or priest or minister of the gospel of any denomination" according to Idaho statutes. Now the conundrum is that one must be a minister to solemnize a marriage, even a civil ceremony. So the task is intimately tied to their religious office. They cannot set aside their religious duties to perform the ceremony under other auspices as they would then not be ministers and therefore not authorized by statute. Except its not that way. Read the legal briefing you can find in the links. The ministers are loosely affiliated with the Baptists, but essentially they're running an open-to-the-public marriage shop. For $80 you too can be married in a Christian church.
Of course this all depends on how seriously you take Christian marriage. Try to walk into an Orthodox church and ask to be married on the spot. So does this mean that ebola is food borne and a human can become infected by eating the tainted meat or is it passed to the human as a consequence of handling the infected animal's carcass? And no, I am not thinking that the two year old butchered the meat but a family member who is the food handler could have had animal guts on his/her hands and then touched the child.
Yes.
It has long been known that bats and monkeys (bushmeat) are hosts to the virus. Unfortunately, the virus has been found in dogs, which is why they get so hyper about pets. The real question is, were any wild animals or unknown dogs infected by the vomit they left on the sidewalk for 5 days? The better question is when will ebola establish itself in some North American bat species and become a reservoir of infection here.
Before the 19th century, and because of the speed that steamships could cross oceans, bubonic plague wasn't endemic in North American ground burrowing rodents. Now it is and sporadic infections of humans happen. While plague is treatable, ebola imposes insane costs before its contained. "So does this mean that ebola is food borne and a human can become infected by eating the tainted meat or is it passed to the human as a consequence of handling the infected animal's carcass"
I just finished the book SPILLOVER by David Quammen. In these African countries, not only do they eat bats, they eat gorillas and monkeys. Not only do they hunt them, if animals are found dead on the forest floor, humans still eat them in various stages of decay. Most likely bats are the reservoir of ebola, although not proven by finding antibodies AND RNA strands of the virus. However, it's pretty much a given that bats are the reservoir of marburg, another filovirus. the Spillover refers to the actions of zoonose. A infection in animals that spills over to infect humans. Gorillas and other primates are susceptible to ebola. Thousands of dead animals are found during outbreaks. For decades, medical people have been telling Africans NOT to eat dead stuff found on the forest floor due to contamination. Bats are reservoirs for a lot of spillover diseases. In the Phillipines, the bats roost in the trees that the humans harvest the sap from. They transmit a disease called Nippah Virus. Not as lethal as ebola. There are two kinds of bats; fruit eating and insect eating, but over 1100 SPECIES of bats. The bats eat the fruit, or roost in the trees/caves and defecate/urinate on fruit that is then transmitted to primates who also eat the fruit. Then passed on to humans who eat the fruit, or eat the primates who eat the fruit. Through the decades, some tourists have been infected with ebola/marburg by entering caves that contain bat guano. It can infect you by microabrasions on your skin. Mucous membranes, so if you eat something tainted, or brush against body fluid tainted or it gets splashed in your eyes, nose, ears or throat... I've seen a lot of comments about how some people are NOT infected when exposed. If a family eats the infected animal, why aren't ALL of them dead? Nature has it's mysteries. ------- I believe you can read the ebola parts of the SPILLOVER book online, I was reading Quamman's twitter feed. His info is much better than the sensationalized Preson Hot Zone info. Maybe this Keystone Cops administration was meant to be, maybe the exposure to government ineptitude and dissembling will equate to hitting bottom. It happened almost a hundred years ago, when Progressivism was thoroughly discredited, due to the failures of Woodrow Wilson. Like the current president, WW was supposed to be the “second coming”, the “be all and end all” of American progress; the spin and hyperbole was much the same as 2008. But it all went wrong, and Modern Republicanism — in the form of Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover — and modern liberalism both emerged as reactions to the excesses of Progressivism. The backlash was severe enough that even the term, “Progressive", was discarded. Michael McGerr (U of Ind and historian of the Progressive Movement)
The federal courts have long held that the 13th amendment which abolished slavery also prohibits all forced labor. You can't force somebody to work for you. You can't make them perform a marriage for you or penalize them if they refuse.
The 13th amendment doesn't work that way, but nice try. If you read the legal briefs asking for an injunction, this amendment is not even mentioned.
So this is what's probably happening (as gleaned from the same brief): The church is a store-front outfit very very loosely affiliated with one of the Baptist organizations. They offer their marriage services to the public for a fee of $80 - $102 if the couples will sign an agreement that they're not gay and believe in the parent Baptist doctrine. Contrast this casual, will-marry-for-a-couple-of-sawbucks approach to any Catholic, Orthodox, mainline Protestant church. The church will probably win because of the first amendment though. This isn't a good test case, and its news only because of the persistent need for conservatives to feel persecuted. "We are gathered here to join these two disgusting perverted sinners in unholy matrimony. By the power forced upon by an out-of-control State, I now pronounce you eternally dammed sodomites. Please don't kiss each other in front of me, it's repulsive."
Why would a gay couple want to force a preacher? The preachers, such as they are, are picking a fight they want to fight. So are the gays. They all win because they all get a rise out of the blahgosphere which is not smart enough to read between the lines.
You're getting played like fish. Surely you know the answer to that question. This was never about "equal rights" it is and always was about special rights. They want the ability to automatically win civil cases based on the accusation that they were implicitly or explicitly discriminated against. Next they will sue if ministers haven't married the right number of gay partners. They will sue if the New York fire department desn't have 10% gay firemen/women/other. This is and always has been about power and control. 10% gay in the military, 10% gay in government service, affirmative action...
What they want is to gut hook someone like you with non-issues and provoke a dumb response.
