We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Remember, government is what we do together. Apparently, what we like to do together these days is take from some and give to others. All the politics is over who gets the transfer and who it is taken from with some side arguments over letting defense have so much.
It would be interesting to see how the income transfers break down between SS and on-budget programs.
To say that everypart of the federal government is responsible for the increase in debt/deficit is naive. It is like a father who earns enough money to support his family but has an alcohol and gambling habit that wastes 50% of his income so he borrows. Thus by this logic buying food for the rugrats contibutes to his debt equally with his drinkng and gambling. The federal government has a few mandates in the constitution and in the declaration of independence. The military is one of those, "free stuff" for the willingly indigent is no where to be found. It is no coincidence that since 1961 we have spent about $20 billion on welfare and our national debt is about $18 trillion. If the federal government would stick to it's mandate it could easily live within it's budget. It is all the extra-constitutional pending that creates the need to borrow. The federal government spends about $1.2 billion on welfare which is not only counterproducitve but contrary to the constitution. Wasteful spending is everywhere, congressmen are reelected based on how much wasteful spending that can bring home to their state. The Dept of Education spends about $80 billion a year and doesn't educate a single child. It most functions as a taxpayer funded office of the NEA and a slush fund for ultra-liberal goals. The Dept. of Energy spends about $32 billion a year and produces no energy, never has and never will. It is also a slush fund to dole out subsidies to states and individuals who help elect politicians. Almost all of the federal budget follows a similar wasteful format.
The military is not cheap. The choice is ours to make. The last time we seriously underfunded the military as much as we are doing today it encouraged WW II because we looked weak. While we have cut our standing army to levels we haven't seen since the 30's we have increased welfare spneding dramatically, increased the do nothing departments budgets and spent billions on fraud waste and abuse. Our federal government is inept, corrupt and unconstitutional. While the bureaucrats dole out bribes to cronies they simultaneously weaken our military and encourage China and Russia to expand their military might. If we don't learn frompast mistakes we will have to endure the consequences once again.
