We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I should think that before commencing any adventure in the South China Sea, China would want to consolidate its southern border by reuniting with Taiwan and neutralizing South Korean. In both cases, some sort of non-military intervention might work. The Taiwanese civilian and military leadership could be promised they would retain their positions, privileges and wealth if they submitted to Beijing, and the South Koreans could be promised rule over the whole peninsula if they switched sides. Both deals are doable, especially considering the long bad history all three countries have with Japan and the cultural and historical connections between Taiwan and China.

Both are ALREADY totally co-opted.

Your thinking is so... 19th Century.

Taiwan is NEVER going to be invaded. Its purpose is to justify the PLAN's blue water navy.

The LAST thing Beijing wants at this time is unification -- de jure. Should that calamity occur, how would Beijing justify its staggering expenditures on the PLAN?

China is rising. I would not go to Taiwan even for a few days. One day when the U.S. is thoroughly distracted in the Middle East or after Obama finishes emasculating our military China will take Taiwan and it will be all over and fully occupied in 24 hours. China has it's eyes set further South too. If I were a citizen of Australia I would have already begun a search for some country flee to when China makes it's move to take Australia. You may be thinking that the U.S. would never allow that. You would be right but the U.S. is going to change in the next 20 years and once the Democrats are done the entire U.S. will more resemble Detroit then it will your fathers U.S.
