We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Back in the day, an offspring taking a pharmacology course had to present a paper and was searching for ideas. Read an article about lithium, the Depression, and the popularity of 7-Up. Said offspring duly researched the use of lithium as a medicine and also phoned Pepsico to confirm the presence of lithium in 7-Up in the 30's.
Presentation went really well, with a surprise ending showing the connection with the popularity of 7-Up during the Depression and the ingredient of lithium citrate.
When originally presented with the topic, the prof was skeptical about the 7-Up connection: not part of the received wisdom. However, he was convinced once the research proved the connection. The best bit - and admitted only to the prof, not to fellow-students - was the original source of the 7-Up story: one of Uncle John's bathroom books.
