Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

But marriage is about love and commitment and sex, there has to be sex. Otherwise, it is just two people living together for certain tax and end of life planning benefits. Or to win a radio contest.
The war on poverty didn't go well so they made a lot of them paupers instead. Still poor, but now on government support.
The poor are poor because of their genetics. You cannot change them. The early Progressives like Sanger wanted to get rid of them by restricting their breeding. Not quite PC today.
Government poverty programs are merely palliative and probably do more to alleviate middle class distress over the condition of the poor than anything else. I disagree. For one thing, the poor, like all economic groups, is transitory for most.
I for one was poor, growing up. My grandmother who raised me grew up in the very definition of poverty. Yet, although still poorish at her death she was light years from where she started. I am far from where I started. Poor, is transitory, but can be driven by habits. Habits are also passed down from family. The vast majority of the poor are poor because they do what poor people do.
I came across this post from Timothy Taylor this morning. Meditation of empathy for the poor. He has some good observations, plus a Orwell excerpt that really shows little has changed.
Bottom line is, people with money scarcity act a lot like people with time scarcity, or whatever scarcity. I agree with you that being poor can be transitory, the reason is that when you stop doing the things the poor do, the most likely outcome will be that you stop being poor. Since the end of feudalism, it has always been thus. If that changes, we are all in more trouble than we can imagine.
9 facts about the poor
All have hot and cold running water and indoor flushing toilets They are not living as bad as most of the worlds poor re The total Cost of Federal Regulation
Two Trillion $$$. Wow. And that is just Federal regulations. And it is getting worse. How much larger can it grow before it collapses from its own weight? That's 2 trillion in a $17 trillion dollar economy. Not a negligible amount, even by government means.
Yes indeed, JKB.
One wonders how much higher profits (and the resulting tax revenue) would be and how much less government would cost if regulations were eliminated? And, how many jobs would be created? I am guessing the numbers would be substantial. Being poor in medieval England was an accident of birth. Being poor in 21st century America is a choice. As hard as it is for the good people of this country to believe that poor people actually prefer poverty/welfare over self improvement and working it is true. Yes there are some sub 90 IQ "poor but most of the rest of the "poor" actually like getting just enough handout to get by and get high. If we replaced welfare with workfare almost overnight most of the poor would choose to get out of the system. So the single biggest cause of poverty is welfare and until we end it poverty will continue to increase. Contrary to logic and popular belief welfare is not intended to give the poor a hand up. It's intended purpose is to trap a dependent class who would remain faithful voters for the Social Democrat politicians. So viewed from that perspective it is a roaring success.
I think we need to get better with our terms. I have adopted the traditional definitions. Poor is having less than the average. Poverty is being extremely poor. Pauperism is being on government relief or public charity, i.e., welfare.
Being poor, even poverty, can occur by happenstance, such as the breadwinner dying suddenly without sufficient life insurance to support their family. Now a bit of assistance, short term, is not terrible thing and can give a person a leg up. However, our welfare state is slow to provide aid, especially temporary, and loath to release those they take on as clients. Once the welfare "income" is rolling, to work more than a bit, is to risk losing multiples of what the work gained you...suddenly. We need a weaning path off the client rolls. A good number of the unexpected poor would leap to that path at the first opportunity to rebuild their lives. If you get into the nitty gritty of "welfare" you find some really odd impacts. My sister just told me of a woman she knows who is on disability due to leukemia, and has significant medical expenses. She scrapes by but doesn't qualify for food stamps (the easiest program to get on) due to the disability payments. I saw similar weird effects when my brother fell sick. I had been providing him money to live on but showing up at the ER without insurance gets you rolled over to the welfare people. Who want you to apply, even though, besides food stamps, it was deny, deny, deny. Mostly because he was an older male. BTW, he didn't live long enough to use his EBT card once. And I negotiated payment of his hospital bills. He had lost his job a few years earlier and spiraled. re For Now, No Six Flags Over California
The Bureaucracy only validated about 3/4 of the million signatures and 800,000 were required for the initiative to proceed. Geez. I wonder if there are really that many invalid signatures or if this was just a knee jerk rejection by the ruling masters of California? The last thing they want is their empire broken up. As we see with the panic over Scotland, our "betters" are getting nervous that some will escape, for better or worse.
Better to starve as a free man, than be a full-bellied slave. For more information on the cost of regulation see the CEI report.
http://cei.org/10KC The link about the G-spot was just click-bait.
Women have a bewildering amount of variation in their sexual wiring and responses. Some have what is clearly described as a G-spot, others only get off on clitoral stimulation. It's as if women are DESIGNED to confuse men! Theoretically, one might think SALON would know about the latest in sex; but it is SALON, therefore I trust it not.
Playing Outside: Austin, so I understand, is the Left-Most Place in Texas. The Poor will always be with us, for well will define them "just so". Gotta keep them Welfare Workers on the payroll.... Scots Independence: Hmmmmmmmmm. I would think the Scots would be less in favor of immigration, than same as the UK, but maybe they plan on a different selection plan for immigrants.
