We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Many years too late, the MSM and the government are getting the obvious message which docs have known all along. Unless you do manual work all day and are skinny, you don't need hardly any carbs to be fit and healthy. What carbs to eat very sparingly, if at all, to be strong and lithe? See below the basic list ofthe bad things which few Americans need to thrive:
All fruit (except strawberries and blueberries). Fruit is just flavored sugar, as are fruit juices All root vegetables - potato, carrot, beet, etc etc All grains (including rice, brown rice is especially bad as is quinoa) All bread, cereal, pasta. It's junk food, but good enough for manual laborers or the starving in Africa Most dairy (eg milk, ice cream, etc. Fatty cheeses are fine, as are eggs)
Carb-produced fat on your body is the worst thing for your heart, your joints, some cancers, your sex drive, and your youthfulness, vigor, and energy. If you are skinny and fairly muscular, ignore this.
Unless you are too skinny or healthily-skinny, I suggest one to one and a half smallish meals per day, mainly meat, eggs, greens, and vegetables. Why Westerners decided three meals daily was needed is a historical mystery, and very wrong unless you were a farmer or a growing child: most people used to be farmers, who worked until they dropped and their little kids helped all day too. Being overweight was a sign of wealth, and now it sort of functions as a sign of poverty and the underclass.
OK, a sugary dessert once weekly as a special treat. Alcohol as desired. Your hunger and your stomach will shrink quickly, as will your burdensome lard.
You will feel better and more vigorous, if that is what you want. Some people want that, some do not. Our current prosperity gives us that free choice, in the Western world.
Examine charts 19 and 20 in this posting. See how obesity seems to track the increase in grains in the American diet? Caloric sweeteners may have also added to the problem. But fat and protein were not and are not the problem
Wish it were true. If only there was finally some definitive diet that is "good" for you and of course reliable information about what is bad for you. But there is no such thng. All there is, is bias and misinformation. Your weight will be "mostly" determined by your genes not your diet. Any fad diet will be woefully inadequate and the best diet is probably to eat from a large list of foods across the entire spectum of available food as opposed to creating a list of foods to not eat out of a belief that they are "bad" for you. Where is the evidence? And to that point let me address the increase in obesity that "seems to track the increase in grains in the American diet". The increase in obesity tracks the ethenic diversity in America. Most of the hispanics who immigrate to this country tend to be obese and most black tend to obesity as well. When you compliment this genetic trait with an abundance of food in this country not usually found in hispanic or black countries the result is as expected. Most obese people cannot lose significant weight unless they adopt a "starvation diet" which is unhealthy and unsustainable. Most thin people cannot become obese if you offerred them a million dollars to do it. It's genetic!
What is important is to eat a varied diet and avoid fad diets. If you have a illness or genetic condition that requires a specific diet then follow that diet. Otherwise sugar or salt, grains or root vegetables, prepared foods or natural foods, etc. won't hurt you nor will they make you live longer.
I am 71 years old, I eat 4 meals a day. My last meal between 7pm and 10 pm consists of chocolate/candy, chips, cookies, nuts; junkfood. I have done that my entire life. My blood pressure yesterday was 117/73 and my weight (210 lbs) is almost perfect for my height. As I write this it is 6:10 pm and I have a stash of chocolate chip cookies in the fridge calling my name. If I don't post here tomorrow you can assume the cookies caused a massive heart attack. LOL.
I do know that and I'm so happy that it is the case. I have great empathy for people who have a weight problem. My poor sister in law probably weighs 400 lbs on a 5'3" frame. She is a very nice person with a health problem not of her choice. She did at one time use a well known diet program administered by a company that provides meals and she lost 98 lbs over a one year period. But the effort and the constant starvation diet was unsustainable so she quit and gained it all back and more. I admit in my younger life I too thought "fat" people were simply over eaters or "slobs" etc. and had little sympathy. But sadly it is not so simple. Now this women's four children, my nieces and nephews, will go through a lifetime of dealing with their weight issues. Like their mother each of them are really great people who deserve better. But life isn't fair. I wish there was an answer, a simple answer like eat these things and you will live a long and healthy life. But it simply isn't true.
