Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Globe Thistle

An easy and tough plant for the perennial border, mid-summer bloomer. Comes in many varietals (races).


Since I learned this week that talking about gardening is racist and classist (but is it sexist too?), I need to do more of it to offend our sensitive readers.

I dig and burn ever thistle I can find. I like them, I like that butterflies like them but they'll take over creation if you don't do constant murder on them. Even mowing won't control them.

I agree with JKB. Musk thistle was brought over from Russia as an ornamental plant and now it is a very expensive weed to control. If left to themselves they will crowd all other vegetation out. Canadian thistle is a problem too.

Whenever I see thistles my first thought is, "kill it."

Must kill all thistle regardless of racial makeup. No profiling, or stop and frisk. Death to the thistle!

This looks like the big round blue thistle plant that I transplanted one summer from my mother's garden and planted next to our driveway. It's really a pretty plant, and I loved it. I anticipated the giant globe as it matured, and on the day it finally bloomed that first year our boys were out playing basketball on the driveway and of course the ball bounced right over to the plant and landed in the perfect spot to knock the bloom off, and as fate would have it, I was even right there to see it happen.

Oh dear, I made a bad pun based on color, ie race. Even worse, I called "blacks" "colored". Is "blacks" OK? Or is it "Afro-Americans"? What, what, what buzz word is au courant today amongst our liberal betters?

Thistle has a 20 foot taproot, which is why it is impossible to come back.

THe only that rivals it's perniciousness is multi-flora rose. Which is probably the best smell ever, but not welcome in pastures.
