We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
GVT taking 10 students to climate change conference:
Is there any mention to said students of their own contribution to climate change as they will be FLOWN THERE USING FOSSIL FUELS WHICH ARE SUPPOSEDLY WARMING THE PLANET?
Every day I wake up and hope this nitemare has ended.
Long ago, Andrew Carnegie did the same thing Bezos is doing, in an attempt to 'own' the steel marketplace. Eventually his investors, and competition, forced him to take a different tack.
Bezos is fine in his supposition that this strategy will work, as long as he owns a large proportion of shares and can keep the major shareholders in agreement. Bezos owns about 19% of the company.
If the strategy 'works', the gains are from capital appreciation.
If it 'fails', investors will hold his feet to the fire. In a situation like this, with massive capital investments to support products and ideas which could lower costs and/or generate revenue, all you need is a big PR failure to make you shift course.
Of course, one big win could theoretically offset that loss - but the problem is managing PR. After all, the Tet Offensive was a US military success. Except it wasn't.
So far, he's doing a great job. He is, without a doubt, the new "Steve Jobs". He's got great ideas, and he's aggressive. But lots of people and companies out there are also aggressive and have great ideas. Bezos is just lucky enough to have the capital to support him at the moment.
I wish they were just con artists. Con men only want your money. These pigs want to our children's souls.

re Study Finds That Men Like Nice Women, But Not the Other Way Around
Study after study finds this to be true. Women want dominant men who are... well... assholes. And yet, we have sexual harassment laws and and a phony rape crisis on college campuses. It's all very confusing.
"Men Like Nice Women, But Not the Other Way Around"
My theory is that women like masculinity in the same way men like tits (or nice legs or ass, etc.). Women are biologically attracted to strong "real men". Many of these men tend to be "bad boys". The heart wants what the heart wants. Call it love, call it sexual attraction, it's our biological imperative.
True. I also think there is a instinct or imperative at play. Just as the biggest and baddest bull elk gets the females there is something about the tough guy, the fighter, the abrasively arrogant, the strong man that attracts women at a subconcious level. An example is the recent dustup in the media about a football player who knocked his girlfriend out in the elevator. He can be seen on camera dragging her limp body out of the elevator and then waiting chivalrously for her to come to before proceeding to thier room. What I really thought was odd about this is as the story is beng told this woman is his wife! Seriously! Someone knocks you out and drags you out of the elevator dumping you on the floor and something in your mind tells you this man is marriage material? You gotta know there is something going on here that defies normal definition.
