Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re Coolest Summer On Record In The US
1992 was definitely cooler in my neck of the woods. We only had a couple of 90 degree days all Summer, and then the temp just touched 90. It's definitely cooler in TX. Hit 100 once or twice. In 2011, 100 from June 1-Sept 1.

Again I find it incredible how stupid our politicians can be at times. I have no doubt in my mind that she believes this. She and her fellow politicians are the elite, the leades and who are we to ask questions? Just keep the taxes rolling in. And that brings me to the attempt to tax or prevent corporations moving overseas. Have we really come to this? Repressive tax rates and now punishment for those unwilling to continue to pay those high taxes. It is sheer desperation on the part of our government. They have spent us into bankruptcy and now instead of cutting back and eliminating waste they want to bankrupt the people just so they can continue the wasteful spending and vote buying. Our massive and wasteful federal government is killing our economy and it is the socialist/communist politicians like Norton who are responsible for the mess we are in. It seems to me that while our country spirals into another great depression our politicians have doubled down and intend to take whatever is left from the citizens pockets. My only question is: Do they have an end game in all of this? Something like Lenin's plan for Russia after the revolution. Or is it merely massive incompetence by everyone in our three branches of government? QUOTE: Again I find it incredible how stupid our politicians can be at times. You give those people too much credit. If you added the IQs of Elanor Holmes Norton, Nancy Pelosi, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Joe Biden I don't think you'd get to room temperature number. As for the endgame - of course they have one: Stupid or smart, it's to control everything. The smart ones have the plan, the stupid ones go along. Then you have no right to tax me. I can appreciate Queenan's dilemma.
But as an Irish-American, I'd have probably called him an asshole and left by a side door. I'm not interested in a fight. While there's nothing more annoying that someone indulging themselves in whatever they enjoy (air piano, sleep, etc.) while I want to just enjoy the show, the fact is his response and approach was over the top. I don't try to go out of my way to annoy people, and if others are annoying me, I'll say something in a gracious fashion. It works. I've never seen it not work. But his last commentary about St. Patrick's Cathedral, Bobby Kennedy and all that is simply nonsensical. St. Patrick's is great and as an Irish-American it holds a unique place in our sphere, but hell - I'm Catholic and it's not THAT special. Frankly, neither are the Kennedys. As an Irish-American I wish the Kennedys would go away. They are a distraction, an annoyance, and bring all the Irish down with their outlandish ambition. Actually, ambition is the wrong word, because I can appreciate ambition. Entitlement. That's the correct word. Bobby wasn't all that special. He just learned how to better employ what de Tocqueville had explained. Bribing the US public with their own money is a good way to get elected. None of this has to do with annoying people at concerts. They are a pill, certainly. But I'm not a fan of Queenan's approach to dealing with them. Good Morning:

Still surprized the indoor air pollution nannyists haven't jumped aboard too. Yet, liberty frequentily means the universal right to make bad decisions. "P J O'Rourke on beaches: The water is freezing, the people are fat, and the sun will kill you."
With all due respect tor Mr. O'Rourke's talent for humor, I need to disagree with him about the beach. I can't get enough of the beach. And, in my neck of the woods, it is filled with beautiful people. By which I mean bikini clad womenfolk. By the thousands. The water is fine, the sun is a blessing and the stench of salt water is invigorating. I reckon if you are gonna spend the loot, you may as well pick a location you like. And, you can. When it comes to vacations at least, this is still America. Just ignore all the patrolling helicopters. Most likely, they are looking for someone else... Your man has obviously found the WRONG beach. Our family vacation was camping - with tent (or, as we grew, tents) - at a provincial park abutting a really nice little lake. No motorized watercraft allowed; this was a swimmers' lake. So the offsprings swum, hiked, picked huckleberries, and read (did I mention each offspring brought a small library along, as did I). Great times and good holidays.
