We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Thoughts On A Sunday
The weather has been a little schizo over the weekend, with sun, high clouds, borderline humidity (almost dry but not quite), and no wind. Not that it's affected any summer weekend activities with the exception of hanging out laundry...

Let them reap the (whirl)wind. Windmills for everybody. Leftists have an entitlement attitude -- give me what I want and no body gets hurt. They learned well from the mafia. They will pay dearly for their utopia or live in the dark ignorance they created.

The environmentalists have squandered the design margin and added to the unnecessary expenses crushing business and the little people. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

What' bothers me the most about this self-centered ignorance is that the retirees, low-wage earners on fixed incomes pay, literally, for the decisions of others. Let the greenies freeze, but let other,sensible folk have afforable heat. Of course that won't happen.

New England has a serious energy problem and has for decades. Coal for home heating was popular in the 20th century and was gradually replaced by oil burners. Gas was available in just a few cities and even just a few nieghborhoods in those cities. I can remember when they would bring CNG on a big boat into the Boston harbor to unload. They would stop all water traffic within a mile of the floating bomb to prevent accidents. I think safety considerations stopped this big ocean going bomb from visiting Boston harbor anymore.

Assuming this prediction is true (and most predictions never come to pass), to where will the refugees flee?

Not south, for that is trading fuel for heat for fuel for AC.

Gets worse. Obama's EPA is squeezing out wood heat too, sales and repairs on just about every type of existing wood stove are being verboten!

The gist is a new limit on emitted particles or 12 mg. And the old wood stoves that people already own? Older stoves that don’t cannot be traded in for updated types, but instead must be rendered inoperable, destroyed, or recycled as scrap metal.

So on a still New England night next winter, when the wind don't blow and the sun don't shine, how many will freeze to death? And if their Democrats should I care?

I was talking to one old guy today, he has a wood stove that he likes to use to supplement his furnace.

I asked him if he knew about the EPA ban and what he planned to do about it.

He replied he had a complete welders kit and knew how to use it. On the stove or Obama's ass, all the same to him..

He's got a point, Ben Franklyn built his radiant wood stove with the tools of his time. Did these this idiots in Washington give any thought on how to enforce this on us? Anyone can build a wood burning radiant stove from scratch (if they had to). But it will be good practice for making Sten guns later.

Yes John. I think you are right on construction and enforcement, but I am thinking there are lots of people that don't have the facilities and/or the skills to build one from scratch.

Nukes are not really competitive in New England right now with low Natural Gas prices, but this can change. There still are the legacies of years of lefty governance to clear out. In CT there is a law on the books banning nuclear plants until the Feds establish a nuclear waste disposal facility. (however Harry Reid took that off the table!)

Volatile electricity prices caused by unbalanced use of natural gas as a fuel have negative downstream effects on the economy.

Today spot prices are maybe $4.10 at the Henry Hub in Lousiana but we've seen $15 in the last decade and a low of maybe $2.50 (add transmission cost to New England.)

Stable prices help consumers of electricity in their planning. I think a public welfare case can be made to forgo the bargain price swings for a portfolio of generation that smooths out prices over a longer time period.
