Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

RE: Asians Bleed a Lot: Racial Violence in Rochester.
One quote stands out to me: "“The comments by the newspaper and these people in authority are blatantly ignorant and predator-enabling,” Newburn said. “Black predators know they will never be held accountable for any outrageous or violent action, and they are completely conditioned to understand that someone will stand in front of a reporter or TV camera and make excuses for them. They know they're protected, nationwide."" That sounds very much like a description of Obama; he knows that he will never be held accountable for any outrageous action; so, he will never grow up. This is the result of reelecting statist congressmen. It is way past time to clean house. If a good tea party candidate isn't in the running for congress in your district then vote for second best just to get the bum you already have in office out. They don't get it,they don't listen and they don't care about us. Vote them out. Hell! You would be doing them a favor since they will make far more money as a lobbyist anyway. Vote them out whether you are Democrat or Republican vote them out. Don't just refuse to vote, a vote against them is twice as effective as simply not voting. but, but, but, It's FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. And for the children of course, that too, never forget the children. Here's one I missed the other day:
Burger King has introduced the Gay Whopper. One wonders what genius in Burger King ok'd this move? I can't help but think politicizing the menu will cost them more business than they gain. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2014/07/01/burger-king-gay-pride-burger-parade-fast-food-gay-rights/11903861/ so it's just for an event. Both BK and McD regularly have temporary products for big events like that.
It's good marketing, caters to the expected visitor of the event. After the event is over, the product is dropped (with the added twist from McD at least that they sometimes have an opinion poll where customers are asked to "vote" on previous temporary products, the winner then being brought back permanently (or for a year or so at least)). I see nothing wrong with leeching money from impressionable libtards by giving them a "gay whopper" for the price of your most expensive product that's just the cheapest product you normally carry with a pink napkin added ;) SALON: Leftist wimps. I could be more insulting, but why bother?
Meats: How are termites wrt CO2 and methane production? Koons: Could I care? Ummmmmmm no. Of minor point regarding the meat health hierarchy what it fails to explain is that lamb is SOOO high because we essentially export all our USA grown lamb to Australia and then import most of our lamb, from..... (wait for it)....Australia. I suspect that most of the CO2 production noted in that article comes from transportation costs of the animal feed, intermediate shipping (calves to feedlots- not done with chickens, BTW) and then distribution of processed meat. In other words, its how we do our agriculture, not the animal itself (see better pig article posted several days ago)
Beef has the higher "carbon footprint" because it takes 24 months to raise to slaughter-weight on pasture; 16-18 months on grain/hay (feedlot) and about 1/2 the carcass goes to waste (if you consider fertilizer, glue materials, leather - waste) I mean non-edible.
Lambs, not only are mostly raised in Australia adding to their transportation costs, but 1/3 the carcass is not edible and what meat IS on them is lean, esp. if they are pasture-fed, so feed to gain ratio is very low, with meat in the 40lb range per animal, compared to 800lbs (from a 1800lb fat steer) Goats are even less, although quite a few of my neighbors raise boer goats, which look huge compared to those companion goats people use to graze stickerbushes and poison ivy patches, and as friends for their solitary horse. By selective breeding meat-birds can be brought to the table in as little as 6-8 weeks, that's why their input/output ratio is so high. Their breasts are so unnatural (and this goes for turkeys too) that they have to be slaughtered, otherwise they would die from cardiovascular collapse because their skeletons/musculature is not strong enough to support their ever increasing weight. That's why the Thanksgiving turkey 'pardon' is such a cruel joke. I like to explain it to anyone who has never raised livestock, that letting them die of a heart attack or collapsed lungs is not "humane". We have bred them to survive only in captivity and only to provide for us. If you want lean, gamey tasting meat go hunt a wild turkey or goose. The cooking time is about 1/3 because the meat/fat is not there. Pigs are the best result of feed to meat ratio because we use so much of the carcass. As evidenced by the hoofs you see pickled and the amount of sausage/scrapple you can get from boiling down almost everything. You use everything but the squeal. That being said, I find these articles written about livestock and farming difficult to read when the major point is that we "harming the planet". If one chooses to eat tree bark and grass that's their concern, but they are not going to influence my family's decision to raise our own animals for our own consumption. Our animals are well taken care of for their short time on earth. And carbon dioxide is not a pollutant. |
