We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Several days ago you posted a picture of a park in AZ with a sign saying that this park was no longer safe for families to camp and enjoy the wilderness. It was no longer safe because it has been a major route for drug smugglers coming into AZ from Mexico. Oh well " what difference does it make now?"
It makes a difference because if you look at the geography of this place we call the USA you will note several mountain groups running roughly north/south: the Rockies, the Cascades, the Sierra Nevada range, the mountains that provide a barrier between the metropolis of LA and the adjacent dessert. These mountains are sometimes referred to as the Angeles National Forest. Several years ago those foothills were no longer safe because of the Mexican drug gangs. However, there have been so many forest fires that there basically is no reason to go to the campgrounds anymore anyway. You can pretty much bet if a law is passed to enable each state to take over USFS lands (as the GOP wants to do) that the state of CA will sell this southern tip of the Sierra range to the highest bidding drug lord. I suppose that like the Chicago mafia or the Vegas mob, the Mexican drug cartels would also want to get in on the housing development business. But, even if "we the people" don't sell, subdivide, etc. That foothill range is still a very quiet place to run illegal traffic north/south. I am always stunned at how little the American people understand about their own geography and the accompanying geopolitics. I have just one question for MF today: what is the process for activating the state/National guard? Why can't we start defending these public areas with our own people who work/volunteer for the National Guard? Woops that was more than one!
"Is it mean and hateful to deport illegal aliens?"
My son was born 6 weeks before I moved to Europe. My daughter was born there. It never occurred to me that We should stay or that it was a terrible inconvenience to go home and bring my children with me. It is the same with anyone who came into this country legally or illegally. If they are citizens of another country how could it be anything but the correct thing to do to help them get home? If they had a child born here why should if be a U.S. citizen and why shouldn't it go home to it's mother country. Whether it by their own choice because we enforce our laws and deny them jobs and welfare or our choice because we caught them and deported them the right thing to do is send these people home.
I have been told by someone who works within the enforcement system, that they have zones where they try to keep the drug gangs and encourage normal people to go elsewhere. That does NOT mean that "elsewhere" will be protected 24/7. It just means that some turf has already been surrendered to the gangs in LA.
I read somewhere that Eisenhower had a great way to deal with the illegals from down south. He sorted them by country i.e., El Salvador, Guatemala, etc. and then put them on old troop ships in the hold. Sailed them down to the waters offshore of their country and held them on board for about 6 or 8 weeks. If you do that to folks a few times I'll bet home starts to look not so bad.
The problem we have now is the power of the drug cartels who rule everything south of us. The other problem we have is we continue to collaborate with corrupt leadership of Mexico. We SEND THEM MONEY! How nice. In our minds the corrupt officials of Mexico are no different than the people of Israel. How did we get here?
Law in this country no longer is tied to statutes passed by state or Federal legislators, or the Constitution. Law is the whim of the President and Federal bureaucracy at any given moment with no consistency.
Why doesn't it occur to the nice people who proclaim that the "children" must be allowed to stay that putting these kids out on the street under their own recognizance inevitably leads to human trafficking? The idiot parents in their home countries have been sold a bill of goods, selling their kids in hope they will allow the parents to come to the US, The politicians and nice liberals who, in this as in all things, fail to follow logic thru are complicit at least and guilty at worst in the ruin of young lives.
My uncle tried to get residency in Mexico back in the 80s. His sister lived there and he had the $100,000 minimum in the bank. He had to leave. I don't feel that we need to accept anyone from a country like that.
