Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Off topic: Can the Bitcoin game now be rigged?
Bitcoin security guarantee shattered by anonymous miner with 51% network power From the article: "For the first time in Bitcoin's five-year history, a single entity has repeatedly provided more than half of the total computational power required to mine new digital coins, in some cases for sustained periods of time. It's an event that, if it persists, signals the end of the crypto currency's decentralized structure. Researchers from Cornell University say that on multiple occasions, a single mining pool repeatedly contributed more than 51 percent of Bitcoin's total cryptographic hashing output for spans as long as 12 hours. The contributor was GHash, which bills itself as the "#1 Crypto & Bitcoin Mining Pool." During these periods, the GHash operators had unprecedented powers that circumvented the decentralization that is often held up as a salient advantage Bitcoin has over traditional currencies. So-called 51 percenters, for instance, have the ability to spend the same coins twice, reject competing miners' transactions, or extort higher fees from people with large holdings. Even worse, a malicious player with a majority holding could wage a denial-of-service attack against the entire Bitcoin network." http://arstechnica.com/security/2014/06/bitcoin-security-guarantee-shattered-by-anonymous-miner-with-51-network-power/ One wonders who is behind GHash?? Mujica delivers Obama message to Castro: 'let's talk about lifting the trade embargo.”
POU and POTUS should read Michael Totten's Letter from Cuba: To Embargo or Not, which was linked to at Maggie's Farm. Cuba can purchase food and medicine from the US- for cash. Unfortunately for Cuba, its productive capacity has been so atrophied by a half century of Fidelista style communism that it has little to sell. Its sugar industry, for example, is a shadow of its former self. There is no "free trade" with Cuba- its totalitarian government tightly controls trade. The lion's share of salaries paid to Cuban employees in foreign "owned" tourist hotels goes to the Cuban government, leaving Cuban employees of those hotels with $20-30 per month. Pepe Mujica was a wannabe Fidel from way back. QUOTE: With financing from the party, Mujica—who went by the nickname Pepe—traveled the communist world, visiting, among other places, Moscow, Beijing, and Havana, where he met Che Guevara and Fidel Castro in 1959, just months after they took Havana. When Pepe returned to Montevideo, he abandoned Erro’s party and became a guerrilla. Very little is known about how exactly Pepe went from a young democratic socialist to full-on gun-toting guerrilla fighter. But according to Mujica: El Florista Presidente, a biography by Uruguayan journalist Sergio Israel, the Cuban Revolution pushed Mujica to imagine a similar South American upheaval. It was in this context of revolutionary longing that Pepe joined the Tupamaros. Pepe Mujica wanted to turn Uruguay, often called the Switzerland of South America for its generous social welfare programs which had been in place in Uruguay since the 1930s, into the Cuba of South America. The irony here is that one reason for supporting Cuban style totalitarianism is for its allegedly high social welfare indicators- life expectancy, infant mortality. Uruguay has been at or near the top of such social welfare indicators in Latin America since well before Castro took power in 1959. You're at the top, but you need Cuban-style totalitarianism to improve. Granted, Pepe Mujica apparently no longer believes that, but he was once willing to take up the gun to enforce such irrational thinking. While Pepe Mujica appears to no longer be a wannabe totalitarian, he still believes that "there are no enemies on the left." Thus his being buddy buddy with the Castros and his refusal to condemn Venezuela's political repression. Mujica spent about 15 years in prison, and was tortured while in prison, but sees no need to speak out for political prisoners when leftist regimes such as Cuba or Chavezuela are doing the imprisoning. After all, "there are no enemies on the left." marrys. hook ups
I must be a hopeless fossil. While I agree with most of the points made in that slide show, I am very happy that Mrs. Mudbug does not have any facial piercings (or any other than ears) or tats! I have a pretty low tolerance for either of those (a small rosebud, butterfly, etc. tat is about as far in that direction as I'd prefer her to go - and she ain't going there. However, I do agree with the distinction that is made. I think the the message, "Fall down seven times, get up eight" is pretty cool but I would prefer it be a motto that is lived not a tattoo. The idea is obviously, "who do you really want to spend the rest of your life with", but something that is part of that is "who do you want to be the mother of your children" (or father of your children if you're a woman. If people kept that in mind when they were screwing around, there would be a lot less pain in the world. that article was written by a subadult male who life may or may not eventually bitchslap some sense into.
At least it looks like he's got some semblance of sense. So many seem not to have gotten as far as he has.
The IRS scandals are much worse than anything Nixon did or tried to do but the implication I draw from it and many of the other Obummer administration scandals is much more far-reaching than just political expediency.
In my opinion, the idea behind most of the scandals (IRS, boarder, Fast & Furious, executive orders, etc.) is to blow up the system. They know that the media will shield them be not reporting or fully reporting them so that public opinion will not be focused on any of them. That would be required for an impeachment to be successful. While the country might generally have low confidence in him, there is not specific enough outrage to support a conviction in the Senate. In the end, he keeps trashing the Constitution and the country. The next opposing president would either be constrained by the Constitution (which would make him somewhat weaker as appropriate) or would thwart it too - maybe to correct some of the disastrous Obummer policies. If he follows the Constitution more closely, the leftist opposition can use that against him in an election. If he circumvents the Constitution, a precedent will be more deeply set. The truth is that the Constitution has been circumvented by members of both parties so neither political party is blameless. I believe the left has instigated more damage but the right often validates the precedent by following or enhancing the left's policies (e. g. Nixon extending welfare). This is not a fun time if you believe in the Constitution. |
