Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

There's another single-payer system in the US that has been providing inadequate healthcare for 200 years. The Indian Health Service (as it is called today.)
BTW, it is also an example of how the US government will honor agreements, in this case treaties, once they take your guns. Here's a recent story from Montana. And we shouldn't forget the annals of government healthcare where doctors purposely did not treat Black men for venereal disease to see what would happen. I was put on this thought by a storyline in Longmire where the murders he was investigating turned out to be retaliation for a doctor who did non-consensual sterilization of women on Indian reservations in the 1970s. Fictional but probably based on true events. It would seem you don't know a lot about the Indian health care. It is 100% free, a gidft from you the taxpayer to them the non-taxpayers. Yes they are exempt from federal and local taxes. They also receive cash and benefits for free sufficient for you or I to live on, another gift from the taxpayers. The Indian health care is very expensive, they actually build small cities to house the doctors and medical staffs and very nice and quite expensive hospitals all free thanks to the taxpayers. But what do thet treat, what is the crying need that equates to about $50,000 per Indian living on the reservation??? Why drug and alcohol abuse of course What did you think they were going to spend all that welfare money on? To "dis" the Indian free health care system for some perceived inadequacy would be akin to shooting your host at a dinner party because he didn't serve up grey poupon with the meal. It is way past time we allow the Indians to "own" their property and take it out of federal hands and tribal elite hands and allow them to move into the 21st century.
JKB,
Don't put too much faith in the story lines in Longmire. The smallpox in blankets was also cited, which has been thoroughly debunked. Just because it's referred to in Longmire doesn't mean it's "probably based on true events." That's like citing Little Big Man concerning the native Americans living in peace with one another and in harmony with nature. Pure B.S. Don't believe me? Ask a Navajo what he thinks of a Haida or visa versa. Given that Navajos are in Arizona and the Haida in British Columbia and Alaska, probably not very much or very often. Perhaps you meant the Hopi?
Nope. I meant Haida as in modern day Haida and Navajo. I had a few Haida students in Seattle that went to Arizona/New Mexico for training in the trades following their graduation from high school. The left the program early and disgusted because of the racism exhibited toward them by the Navajo. Their candid description of the Navajo can't be printed in this "family oriented" site.
$1000 security blankets for kids.
This is just another delusion, brought to you by our semi-capitalist system (that is likely to be funded by your school taxes) just like bicycle helmets, motorcycle helmets and skiing helmets. After decades of using them, some people realized that they don't really 'save your life' they just keep your brains from leaking out onto the pavement and possibly keep you alive long enough for some doctor to decide to hook you up to a machine (at the cost of $2M+/yr) when you are a vegetable. In other words: feel good utopia. FOotballers know that when you have the equipment on, it makes you more likely to exhibit risky behavior that heightens your risk of getting hurt. False sense of security. Oh wait, I can see the lawsuits of the parents who's children were NOT saved by these things. Proceed. Removing GUN FREE ZONES would do more to lessen risk of dying by gunfire. I think the guy who thought of this, just added the tornado protection thing as an afterthought. Or he watches too much syfy channel where you can stop the destruction of the earth with an atomic bomb, or outrun a tornado. Yeah, I used to joke about the hard hat when I visited container ships that were loading. The hat was so they could tell right where I was standing as the rest of me, including my brains, would be running out from underneath the container. The plastic would be crushed into a nice defined spot.
Funny they don't test the "blanket" as a blanket but rather as a close-fitting material backed by the clay. Vests are designed to be close-fitting as the body is the backstop to spread the force. A vest flopping in the air like a blanket can be penetrated as the energy can stretch the fibers to the breaking point. And the blankets for tornadoes? I didn't see any test for a 2x4 going 200 mph. On the other hand, with a sail on their back, the kids could make it 20 miles or more before being dumped. Obamas legacy is going to be chaos on the border, economic and regulatory chaos at home, and allies abraod who are convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that America cannot be trused to be anything other than inconstant.
Yes, I was listening to CNN softball Mrs. Clinton. When she talked about the Sandy Hook shootings and called for a ban on automatic weapons I wondered why the CNN reporter didn't:
a) point out that there is already a ban on automatic weapons in civilian hands, b) point out that no automatic weapons were used in the Sandy Hook shootings, and c) point out that universal background checks would have had zero effect on the Sandy Hook shootings. Is it that she was ignorant on all 3 points - in which case she has no business interviewing someone who's talking about it, or is it that she's just a Democratic Party operative working for CNN? I'd say yes.
Most anti-gun fanatics (along with every other fanatic) are quite ignorant with the status of usage, laws, and even events. Beyond sound-bites, and the 'we MUST do something to end ___" (insert needed atrocity), they're lost. 'Reality' is just a word in Mr. Webster's book... As for the Dem Op from CNN - its why they're called Operatives with Bylines.. "We can’t end ‘rape culture’ if we don’t end hook-up culture."
Exactly. She and CNN are both ignorant on these points, and deliberately remain so...or, she's lying and CNN agrees with her.
Sandy Hook?
!. Lanza had attempted to buy a firearm at least once - and did not pass the "non-mandatory non-universal" check. Oh my. Heck, even here in RI, almost as bad as MA or CT, I could find a street dealer. 2. He committed murder, indeed matricide, BEFORE having a firearm, in order to steal firearms (no, Wikipedia, he did NOT "shoot" his mother). Multiple offenses far more serious than teaching your 11-year-old firearm safety. I have not heard a single proposed bit of legislation that would have stopped him, have you? Even a mandatory psych eval (which after all, he had) cannot be relied upon to spot a real vs potential vs non- threat. Too, how about stopping him at least just after the first murder? Not so easy, is it? More, if you look around. I don't own, or even much want to own, a firearm, but the use of the blood of children to make an irrelevant political argument is pretty low. Nor do I mind if my neighbors (well, most of them, heh) have weaponry. There really are only two types of anti-gun or anti-2nd amendment people.
1. The ones who truely believe that if we can take all the guns and punish enough honest people who never harmed anyone that these terrible crimes will end. 2. Those who know that the only way you can truely fundamentally change the U.S. (as in remove our constitutional rights) is to first take our guns. Every mass murdering despotic ruler in history first had to disarm the people before they could murder them by the millions. Those in group 1 are simply wrong and you cannot convince them they are wrong. Those in group 2 know exactly what they are really up to and nothing you say will change them. Mexican Embassy: Mexicans 'Illegally' Crossing U.S. Border 'Are Not Committing a Crime
Whereas Central Americans illegally crossing the Mexican are committing a crime- and deported ASAP. The AMA lost me when they endorsed Obamacare. Now they endorse absolute lunacy about gender. You are and always will be your birth gender--you can cut off or add on parts all you want, but if you have two X chromosomes you're a girl, or one X and one Y chromosome you're a boy, an NOTHING will change that. The AMA endorses this crap merely for the sake of income, just as they did Obamacare (remember the "doc-fix" for Medicare reimbursement?). These procedures are not cheap, nor are the extensive "counseling" sessions, but they sure keep the providers' income up. More liberal BS from the worse than useless AMA.
