We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
With respect to the health benefits of fasting: the first thing little kids do (even infants) when they get sick is to stop eating. Parents get upset and try to make them eat, but perhaps kids know something about fighting illness that we should encourage and do ourselves as adults.
It doesn't do any good to eat if all you're going to do is throw it up.
"The Wisdom of Chillllldreeeeeen!!!!" notwithstanding. Anyone who is sick with the flu or any other infection that raises the body temperature gets sick if they eat. It isn't the children, it is your body telling you something that perhaps, you should listen to.
Post surgery, the drugs make you sick, perhaps not eating is a good thing THEN too.
Read the study, understand that a lot of what was done was done on CANCER PATIENTS on chemotherapy. The rest? Mice.
We don't share much with mice. I am skeptical of studies that use gene knock-out mice, in fact, mice/rats or other rodents.
In all seriousness, this does look interesting and I would like to see a clinical trail where humans are KEPT FOR 3 DAYS in a lockdown (OK, they can leave, but they are no longer in the study) environment where they have NO ACCESS TO FOOD. This should be repeated several, say every 3 months with the same participants to see if the results change.
Measure the various systems, including (of course): IGF-1/PKA. Blah blah blah.
They'll figure out a way to screw it up, or 'ask people' if they were good little boys and girls and fasted. "Sure we did! Yeah, except for that Hershey bar, oh, and the breakfast tacos." Or measure the wrong indicators, or just not want it to work and invent some other way to screw the test up.
Read the last paragraph of that nationalpost.com article that was linked to. Wowie, zowie! We should really just synthesize the effect with a drug!
Re: We've Seen Megachurch. But How About Micro-Church?
Wicken or Christian?
During a community planning process this Spring, our architect asked the congregation, "What makes space sacred?" Quiet, they told her. Beautiful things made by hand. Natural materials. The way the light comes in.
We know the Ice Age is Coming and will be here by 1975 or so because the Science is Settled. but until then, why recreate a cold weather wooly mammoth? why not bring back warm weather-style columbian mammoths, so they can tool around the american midwest?
Santa Clara: Advertising a job for which they know who they are (not will, are) hiring. Way to go, SC!
Micro-church: PuffHo, closed page.
Mammoths: Where would they roam? And, of course, the passenger pigeon, with flocks of feathered locusts and inches of poop in nesting areas, what's not to like?
ATC: "You would think that with the stakes involved, the FAA would place a premium on competence. Or at least you would think that unless you consider that the F stands for “Federal” — and as far as the federal government is concerned, nothing whatsoever matters except left-wing ideology." Exactamente!
E-Cigs: Can't kill tobacco; VE Musssst Haf ze TAXES und tribute!
Fasting: Interesting. How soon will studies say "fasting is bad"?
