We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I had a RON in Manaus in the late '60s. What a dump. Took a C-118 in to get a stranded Air Force general who had gone there to visit some Brazilian military facility, and his airplane had broken down. When we arrived, he had been in the best hotel in town for two days, and was at the desk to meet us when we checked in. He was one PO'd general. Wanted to leave right away, and really got PO'd when I told him we were out of crew day and had to RON. That hotel had no AC and no hot water, and was furnished about like a flop house on S. Clark St. in Chicago. We got him out early next AM before the rain started, and got him to Panama about eight hours later. I never saw him again.
Not sure if you're aware, but the World Cup isn't supposed to make money for Brazil, just draw attention to its new status as a rapidly emerging economy.
With its recent growth and laws preventing expatriation of profits, money from foreign firms must be re-invested in Brazil. As a result, the government has tons to toss around and is always looking for ways to spend it.
So a pay-off isn't what they want. They just want attention. This is a dry-run for the Olympics, anyway.
