We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The Forgotten Man was an excellent book.....that I just could not finish. I had too many anxiety attacks realizing how awful the times were, how terrible a potus roosevelt was and how we are repeating these same mistakes. This puts stephen king and any of the horror genre authors to shame.....and it is based on fact and history!
From our friend Schneiderman, The Last Psychoanalyst
I worked a year as an aide in a private psych hospital in the early 1970s. By then, Freudian analyses were becoming to be seen as ineffective for the "turn them around within 6 weeks because the insurance runs out by then" kind of treatment.
Several years after quitting the aide job, I had a conversation with a fellow student who very much wanted to go to medical school - and did. He asked me my opinion on Freud. I replied that Freud was a poet. Which is similar to Schneiderman's calling Freud a storyteller.
Which reminds me of the first time I heard the description of "poet" describing someone whose fame was not related to poetry. In the middle of China's Cultural Revolution, I heard a talk from one of the 30 or so GI POWs who refused repatriation at the end of the Korean War.Several years after the end of the Korean war, he requested permission to leave China, which was granted, and he returned to the US. He claimed that he refused repatriation at the end of the Korean War because he wanted to see China and knew he could always return to the US when he wanted.
In talking about the Cultural Revolution, he called Mao a poet. The verdict of history is that as the leader of the country, Mao was a good poet. Coincidentally, Mao was also a poet. As a poet, Mao was a good leader of his country. And as a psychoanalyst, Freud was a good poet.
Braudel's Mediterranean is a great read if you have two weeks on a beach. Fascinating history. The discovery of the New World was more about bringing back protein, salt cod "staccofisko" than discovering gold!
