Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Woodrow Wilson and the Progressive movement destroyed the entire government.

His Presidency and the 16th and 17th Amendments were a fatal blow.

Wilson was a terrible person and a terrible President.

I like to point out to liberals that Wilson was a rabid racist and one of his first acts as President was to segregate the Federal government.

No, the combination of Hoover and Roosevelt (FDR) did though.

Between Wilson and Hoover were the excellent years of Harding and Coolidge. Unfortunately, the leftist/Progressive historians wrote off both: Harding as corrupt and Coolidge as a simpleton (much like Reagan).

A well stated essay, but TR was as guilty as Wilson in transforming this country. The biggest difference between TR and Wilson? TR was a patriot and had many good intentions. He just didn't give a damn about the constitution. Wilson was a thoroughly evil man.

B Moe, you beat me to it, but it can't be stated enough. I believe the 17th amendment to be the single worst mistake our country has ever made. It forever changed how our government functions in reality as compared to how it is supposed to function in theory. This grand experiment wasn't designed to have the people represented in both chambers of the legislature. Wilson's Sec of State Bryan believed republicanism to be too elitist for the very reasons that our founders thought democracy to be too dangerous.


One good example of how Wilson transformed how the office acts and is perceived, he was the first President since Thomas Jefferson to give the State of the Union in person to Congress . Prior to Wilson, it was delivered via courier for the members of Congress to read for themselves. A very democratic tradition started by Jefferson. It sickens me every time I watch a president address Congress to see how they grovel and cheer as if he were a king addressing his court. Congress, both chambers and both parties, should always defend their interests against the interests of any President. They never do.

I lay that at Lincolns feet. He destroyed the balance between the federal and state governments. The fed structure of president, congress and the courts accept no limit to their power. And the bureaucracy they have created has no fear of the people....it consumes every dollar in a manner that best satisfies its own needs and is still forever hungry.
