We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"America’s Biofuel Boondoggle in One Simple Graph"
"The ethanol we’re producing—primarily derived from corn—fails virtually every metric a biofuel could hope to pass: It doesn’t reduce emissions, it wreaks havoc on landscapes, and it raises global food prices, starving the world’s poor."
But don't you see it is in fact fulfilling it's mandate and intent. It was always intended to bring home billions to a few congressman's districts. It was never about the environment, clean energy or the damage it does to cars and other small engines. It was always about the money. That's why even though it is a failure from any and every rational standpoint in must continue.
The easiest way to remind yourself of that is to keep reading about actual history. We forget how common was violence, early death, persecution, illiteracy, poverty, and rank bigotry even a hundred years ago, let alone the centuries before.
We would find nearly every time and place in human history unendurable, if we were set down in it to live.
Assistant Village Idiot
I agree that right now is a great time to live. But I am worried about the future. I worry because our government and many in the Western World have bankrupted themselves to provide a living for over half of their people (and our government is inviting people from all over the world to come daily for more freebies). When the bills come due and we can't pay, I think that our economy and the global economy will crash in a way that will make 1929 look like a picnic.
I know that we've had virtually unlimited immigration before, but in those days immigrants like my German ancestors came to work and not to get government handouts.
I want to be wrong. For the sake of my kids and unborn grandkids I want to be wrong. But this can't last.
