In my 23 years as a practicing physician, I've learned that the only thing that matters is the doctor-patient relationship. How we interact and treat our patients is the practice of medicine. I acknowledge that there is a problem with the rising cost of health care, but there is also a problem when the individual physician in the trenches does not have a voice in the debate and is being told what to do and how to do it.

As a group, the nearly 880,000 licensed physicians in the U.S. are, for the most part, well-intentioned. We strive to do our best even while we sometimes contend with unrealistic expectations. The demands are great, and many of our families pay a huge price for our not being around. We do the things we do because it is right and our patients expect us to.

So when do we say damn the mandates and requirements from bureaucrats who are not in the healing profession? When do we stand up and say we are not going to take it any more?

Re extreme calorie restriction:

The bulk of the research also shows that the dieters are sterile, both men and women. In fact, this is a well-known (to biologists at least) result of the body's metabolic system, which in starvation shunts available calories to the immediately essential needs.

So, extreme dieting is self-correction: its practitioners leave no offspring and are to all intents and purposes extinct.

The same is true of modern, secular white people. They have few or no children (the status of both of my daughters), and the population of secular whites is declining by 50% every generation.

Someday, the great majority of whites will be believers in some sort of religion. I guess the Papacy and the Russian Primate are good for another thousand years or so, assuming the Second Coming doesn't happen soon.

Re: Incompetent Dads

One of the roots that most people ignore is the Berenstein Bears books. Instead of criticism, those books are praised as "children's classics." Yet the father bear is just as incompetent as Homer Simpson.

Those books set the tone for kids at 3 and 4 years old. Change has to start with those (and similar picture books.) Personally, I think they're garbage and getting rid of them poses no great loss.

"Bumbling dad" is a media construct, not reality. If a dad is actively involved in raising his family, why would a cartoon be disturbing? Why would I care? The kid isn't suffering because a cartoon depicts me as incompetent (because in fact I'm not, and the kid isn't suffering at all), and I don't buy into the false construct, so why would I care? The male ego (at least this man's) isn't fragile and I don't need a pat on the back from Hollywood.

If dad is missing, in jail, or otherwise not doing his job, Family Guy is not the cause of the problem.

The article thinks a positive depiction of dad to a family where single mom is raising the kid will --what, mean something? Make it all better?

Media depictions of anything are not reality, don't treat them as such.

I guess when all those "professors" and administrators at Duke called their lacrosse players rapists, they were doing it in a way that didn't delegitimize, oppress, or insult anyone.

To my knowledge, they have still not apologized for that.

What if professors at Duke encouraged the students to get their heads out of their asses and get the education (for which their parents are obviously paying way too much) instead of encouraging kids to turn the world into Sesame Street?

"Under "Operation Choke Point," the DOJ and its allies are going after legal but subjectively undesirable business ventures by pressuring banks to terminate their bank accounts or refuse their business. The very premise is clearly chilling—the DOJ is coercing private businesses in an attempt to centrally engineer the American marketplace based on it's own politically biased moral judgements. Targeted business categories so far have included payday lenders, ammunition sales, dating services, purveyors of drug paraphernalia, and online gambling sites.

"Operation Chokepoint is flooding payments companies that provide processing service to those industries with subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and other burdensome and costly legal demands," wrote Jason Oxman, CEO of the Electronic Transactions Association, at The Hill.

In a March 2013 hearing before a Senate Banking subcommittee, Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) pointed out the obvious: that DOJ has "no statutory authority" to be doing this. But why bother with statutory authority when you can just secretly strong-arm highly regulated businesses into doing what you want?"

What is often left out of these caloric restriction stories is that the mice are weaned on this diet from birth. It's going to be a human rights violation if it's done on actual babies, but it doesn't work in consenting people using control groups.
