Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Don't feel bad - at least you weren't in NC, buying Arizona iced tea, and get bum-rushed by an undercover cop (who failed to ID himself before assaulting the holder, tackling him to the ground), get charged for trespassing and open container violation, then told by his mouth-piece to take a plea deal.

Since when did we become East Germany or Beijing?

"Man Arrested for Public Consumption of Iced Tea ..." Reckon the ethnic makeup of the neighborhood had anything to do with the cop's action? Nah. And, after several years of newspaper cop coverage, I learned street cops do not admit making mistakes.

the knife rights movement is interesting. For fun, look up your local laws and decide if the a ban on folding knives means taking the pen knife off your key chain.

College athletes: As union members, what are their dues? And when the players are paid via scholarship, how are the SS & FICA going to be withheld, and how will they pay their income taxes on their 'salary'. Questions, questions,; I'll bet you readers can come up with more.

The "war on drugs". Are you kidding me? There was a war on drugs, but the effective pursuit of that war ended a long time ago. Why do you think Janet Reno and Janet Naolitano opened the boarders for the Clintons and kept em open for the Seattle Oligarchs (Boeing, US bank, UPS, etc.)? You don't think for a moment that that Seattle crowd doesn't want in on the world's drug market? They want to control everything and the drug market must just give them the drizzle when they think about what they are missing out on! Which is why we have Republican former US Attorneys demanding to legalize Marijuana in WA state! The only drug war is that war waged on us peons who would choose our right to clean voting opportunities and thus our freedom!

I was wondering about how the value of a scholarship would be taxed. Since it's not a job necessity it should be a part of the taxed compensation. That was the first thing I thought of when I heard this.

The second thing was my long-time solution. Have colleges and universities spin off their football and basketball programs and sell the [non-transferable] 'naming rights' to team owners [individuals or corporations or whatever] who could then deal with tv, etc, pay players and coaches, keep a percentage of all sales of anything related to the team to the college/university, and include full scholarships for any athletes who really wanted a college education. Keep it for ages 17-23.
