We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
RE: Phys Society to bail on MMGW. No real news there - as more people\ORGs realize the hypocrisy\chancery of this sham being force-fed to us, and their current memes ("all MMGW deniers should be put to ___ (enter your pet horrible fate)"), and you can see this house of cards fold.
I REALLY hope Mark Steyn does get to the discovery phase of the trial with the esteemed Dr. Mann, and he doesn't pull a slick one, because the revelations could be staggering.
Indiana has not rejected Common Core, they renamed them after they've run them through a local process.
When asked whether it would be a concern if Indiana’s new standards were similar to Common Core but under different name, Pence said content is what matters.
“Where we get those standards, where we derive them from, to me is of less significance than are we actually serving the best interests of our kids,” Pence said. “And are these standards going to be, to use my often-used phrase, uncommonly high?”
Indiana’s next standards need to be considered “college and career ready” by the U.S. Department of Education so the state can continue receiving a waiver of the federal No Child Left Behind law.
Good Grief. When the New Yorker starts dropping F bombs and allowing misspellings in their articles, I'm done. I've read this magazine off and on since the early 80s and once upon a time it was an oasis of clever writing and dry humor. No longer.
Whether a given program prevents recidivism should be objectively measured if it is to receive public funding. With that said, I have met some ex-cons who have been literally reborn and others who used it to get a lower classification.
Linking climate change to every event reminds me of a fella who blamed things like his car slinging a rod to communists.
Free speech under attack, as usual, if you can't beat em make em shaddup.
Re: The piece from New Yorker magazine suggesting that parents in America have finally reached saturation from "studies" telling them (us, actually) how to raise children may not be exactly as it appears.
I have searched the faculty of University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, Amherst, Boston and Lowell. None of the searches located any faculty member by the name of "Susan Waterson".
I suspect that "Sarah Miller" at New Yorker may be having us on. Either that or Miss Miller actually believes that, if she says it, it must be true.
