We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I've read a number of techie-hacker-site posts and comments which indicate to me that the people who should probably know about this stuff - or at least the people who should probably know more about this stuff than me - think this is lots of hooha over nothing.
The reason, they say, is that we've already, quietly and without fanfare - heck, without leakage - that we've already given up many of the truly meaningful powers and supervisories over the nets so that BO could win points with the condescending EU crowd. See, I truly want us to only be your equals! We're no better than you! Why should we run everything?
Their one important caveat: They must drop the entire "international jurisdiction" creation that's in the current version - which quietly but effectively finally establishes that World Court thingie that we've always scoffed at and about - then the remainder wouldn't mean much.
Which is why BO and the EU are fighting so hard to keep it in, and why they ran this entire world negotiation as a code-word secret proceeding. If BO got on TV and told us he was signing us up for World Court supervision - so anyone anywhere can sue us for anything anytime anywhere - well, I think he'd get some pushback. So this way was easier.
I'm thinking the 24 hour surpervision ship has long since sailed. NSA et al. It seems the Icann will continue to do it's thing of assigning numbers and letters to domain names and such while recieving more "input" from interested parties. It may or may not be a meaningful change. I have no idea. But if the concern is supervision of us by others, that is already and has long since been a reality. I say that sort of assuming that other countries listen to everything like the NSA does. There is no doubt that the new world order conspiracy nuts out there are gonna take this and run it up the flagpole for all it's worth. I will not be buying into such nonsense. That level of international cooporation is unlikely.
