Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Birds

Roughly as I predicted, our blackbirds arrived sometime last night - over a week late. They all made a racket at 5 am on my way to the gym. That's proof of global cooling.


Also at my feeder today along with the usual (Cardinals, Song Sparrows, Titmice, W-T Sparrows, Blue Jays, and House Finches, and an occasional Carolina Wren) a handsome Fox Sparrow. Haven't seen one in quite a while. A pleasure to see the guy on his way to the far north.

The cardinals in my yard like to eat Purina cat food. I suspect it is a very nutritious food for them.

Waiting to see when our red-wing blackbirds show up (SE Michigan). It is usually Feb. 28 or Mar. 1. Last year they were a few days late, despite a relatively mild winter. I'm betting even later this year.

We had some turkey vultures show up yesterday in Knox Co., Ohio, no doubt on their way to the big orgy in Hinckley due March 15th. They were last here Nov. 9th last year.

Cardinals and bluejays are year-round birds here, juncos are snow birds.
