Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Massive backlash: code name for a lot of ineffectual talk. No one will be expelled from the student committees who perpetrated this abomination; no one fired from the administration; etc.
“Freedom is speech is an American concept.” — spoken by a True Canadian. Democrats, FDA Going After Electronic Cigarettes
Why? See the Post-Protestant ethic post from yesterday. The appearance of sin is much worse than the sin. Do they have versions of the vapor liquid that doesn't have nicotine. Just a taste treat? Then the real hypocrisy could be shown. Don't knock the vapor delivery of taste sensations. My dental hygienist told me she got one of those AirFloss devices for her kids. They promptly started using it to blast Coke into their mouths. Windows XP with Cygwin works for me. When it stops working, I'll migrate to linux, which it resembles but has all the drivers.
Hmm, I wonder with 7 states were led by NY sued the EPA to get the new wood burning stove bans?
That list was too stupid for words.
Yeah, the Buckmark and the PPK are probably worth being on a top 10 list. And yeah, if you don't put the 1911 near the top you're going to get all the greybeard fanbois whining like a progressive. But the Kel-Tec P11? And the FN 57 AT THE TOP OF THE LIST? Awfuqueno. The gun grabbers just don't seem to realize that firearm retention is a skill any good gun user works to master.
But, it's a heart and minds campaign. They are winning as evidenced by the four-fold increase in babies named Colt, Remington, even Ruger. Gunner has surpassed Gunnar in popularity. Also, the decline in gun usage in dramas, comedies, cartoons, video games and other entertainment venues. You know, I just realized that the classic NYC walking tour movie, 'The Warriors' has fewer guns in it than just about any show or movie about NYC today.
...surveillance on kids from age five?. Didn't we already know how this works when the Nazis tried similar methods of keeping track of their population?
They are just cloning the database they use for the Department of Corrections.
Windows 8 is essentially a smart phone operating system combined with apps that only work when internet is available and whose only purpose seems to be to sell a product. It wasn't made for PC's, it was either intentionally or inadvertently intended to make the use of a PC more difficult. The best OS would be one that you don't see and generally don't interface with. Instead with Windows 8 you have to work around the OS and find ways to defend against it. I suppose that some kind of "super-OS" that will run on any platfor is inevitable but my advice to Microsoft would be to provide a simple way for PC users to opt out of the screen/app interface so that they can simply use it as though it were a PC with a keyboard and not a phone.
Agreed. Given that PCs no longer dominate the market, it was inevitable that MS would want to have an OS that would be applicable for tablets, smart phones, etc.
Unfortunately, MS appears to have neglected PC users, which were - and may still well be- its bread and butter. In anticipation of XP's demise, I purchased a Dell w Windows 7. I do not mourn for XP. Windows 7 starts up faster- with Dr. M's tips included- and folder organization seems easier. I will be using Windows 7 until its bitter end. We don't need to be concerned about 24 hour surveillance. It will keep the children safe. And, if the children are kept safe, they won't be able to grab a bunch of guns and shoot us. Plus, if the surveillance programs begin to cost a lot of tax dollars and swell the ranks of the government employee union rolls, I'm sure the Tea Party will ride to the rescue. As everyone knows, the Tea Party has been very effective at curbing the growth of spending and government overreach. Though unwilling to do anything even slightly risky to further their stated aims, it's great that a few thousand flag waving, hand wringing, finger pointers are allowed to whimper about high taxes as they huddle in small groups in the basements of their comfortably middle class homes. Sipping good coffee and watching the ball game on their large, flat screen TV's. Comparing notes about whose accountant is better at shaving a few dollars from their tax bills. They make a big difference and are a credit to their liberated nation. Freedom loving Americans love you, wherever they may be. Thank you, Tea party.
I, for one, resent taking Piers off the air. They should be PROUD to lose money on his show, in true progressive fashion.
What a collection of unhappy links! There are many days lately when I wonder just why a generation that seemingly started off so anti-authority and ostensibly free thinking has ended up creating an incipient police state, and why we have some number the best and brightest of the next generation convinced they should all be like Bartleby the Scrivener.
It's convoluted, stealth sarcasm. Like a half-done potato, it's kind of hard to digest and leaves you feeling a little queasy. Read it again with this in mind.
Never liked the idea of explaining the obvious. But, for you, I will make an exception. I am feeling my way through reality. As you say, sarcastically. Have something to add? Then please do.
They will take my wood stove, when they pry it from my charred, black fingers!!!
Err, (rephrase) Ben Franklin built a wood stove for himself using 18th Century technology. So good luck with that. Obviously the next step is the licensing of the sale of firewood, pellets and domestic sales of coal, so I say" Toss a couple more EPA agents on the fire honey". |
