We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Or were dumped into a bad system like our education system where a bad day can mark you as a loser and push you further behind.
I just watched this talk by Sal Khan As Khan points out our factory education system is designed to not to promote competency but rather time served. When the times up, you move on to the next concept whether you've mastered 95% or 60%. No matter if the next concept requires understanding the prior concept. He has a great analogy of what if we built houses the way be teach kids. Foundation at 85%, go ahead and build the first floor, it is at 95% on the project plan date, move on to the 2nd. Considered that way, our way of education is farcical.
