We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

While discussing the Amanda Knox guilt re-instatement on another blog, someone mentioned Italy's imprisonment of the seismologists not long ago for failing to predict.
This made me wonder if in a few years, we won't see Italy round up all the global warming "scientists". They not only are missing their predictions, but are actively lobbying for policies that will prove damaging to the population at large. That would be just to freaking hilarious.
Well, the current campaign to disarm Americans started when some black panthers lawfully carried firearms in the California state capital when Reagan was governor. Really, they just don't want black people to have guns, it scares the Democrats (and sadly many Republicans).
So we will again try another round of education solutions that have not worked, because we do not want to see what drives test scores.
Sputnik moment, crap.
I get it that we would rather there be some other answer, like disciplining kids or not disciplining them, more teacher training or less teacher training, more union or less union, more competition or less competition, more encouragement or leaving kids alone, or whatever everyone's favorite pretend solution is. Those are more fun to argue about, and everyone gets to be an expert on the basis of no data. But northeast asians have an average of 5 IQ points over whites, it's not because they work hard, and they are going to outscore us as a group. That is not changing anytime soon.
I read your comment twice. And I have to confess that I fail to see your point. It may be my fault. Did you mean to indicate that hard work was why the yellow orientals have an allegedly higher, albeit slightly, IQ than their "white" counterparts? Or did you wish to indicate that all efforts to properly educate the young occidentals is doomed to fail because all solutions are, "pretend"? My own solution, if you want to know, is quite real. I say we work the young until they are 15 or so in the coal mines, paper mills and sweat shops until their fingers are no longer nimble. Then, we park the survivors in a school, give them paper and pencil and ask them to learn how to read and write. If they cannot or will not learn, we send the males to camp for intensive full time storm trooper training. Super hard core storm troopers for freedom who could liberate Cuba. For starters. Along with a battalion of half naked cheerleaders of course. We cannot forget the female contribution to our liberation efforts. I think we have had just about enough of this 'losing every war we start' syndrome. It's past time we started a war we can win. Cuba is like right next door and is a small, impoverished nation with nice tropical beaches and vast investment opportunities. I mean, what the heck?
It may be true that Asians have an IQ that is 5 points higher then whites. But in these tests and interpreting the results it isn't cknowledged that most Asians in these rich and very smart cities are not participating in these tests while in America almost everyone does includng people who are here illegally. The comparison is apples and oranges. In Asian countries if you are poor you don't go to school for 12 years and you don't go to the better schools and you don't get tested in these major tests that releases results to the world. You work in a kitchen or farm or market and probably aren't even aware that there are IQ tests in school. India does the same thing as does most of the Middle East. If the U.S. only tested their college bound kids then perhaps these stats might be meaningful.
I have partial agreement that they are stacking the deck in Asia. But the NE Asians here in America do better as well, indicating that there is some truth in the advantage.
The NE Asians in America do better than those in the home countries, in fact. That could be selection, as those who emigrate may be different than those who remain behind. But the numbers have held up pretty well from a variety of researchers with different aims. It suggests that our schools may already be the best in the world, contrary to the annual alarms I have been hearing since the late 60's.
If first generation Asians were brought up just as most Americans are then I would agree that it would indicate a higher IQ. But they are not. The Asian immigrant parents obsess over them teaching them, watching over them as they do their homework, punishing mediocrity and only accepting their best. If American parents brought their children up this way and if our culture supported it and reinforced it, who knows, we might surpass all other groups.
I worked with a guy who loved baseball. His two boys played baseball and off season practiced baseball. The guy coached baseball and coached his kids constantly from the time they could walk. At 8 and 10 the kids were pretty good, better then their peers. Were they "naturals"? No, just the expected result from the extra effort their father made to teach them.
Yes, that is one common idea, that the NE Asians outwork us at school, and that's the secret. The other common idea is that the NW European schools are more laid back and encouraging, allowing children to play and not be subjected to pressure, and that's how they beat us.
Both can't be true. Both areas have scores better than the US, yet they are different from us in opposite directions. What to think?
We come to the same difficulty in state-by-state comparisons. The same states do better, year after year, decade after decade. Many theories are advanced, but suffer from any of three problems: either they are as likely to be cart as horse; they are as likely to be genetic as environmental: or they do not fit the data and can be shown to be untrue. Only the one, impossible theory remains.
On another blog recently I read where a airline evaluated their pilots and found that Asian pilots were typically well qualified on paper. They knew the manuals by heart and did well on the tests. But the author lamented that since their learning style was to memorize everything by rote that their actual abilities fell well below what their tests would indicate. He said that landing a big jetliner in a crosswind was still a mystery to these well trained and experienced pilots and flyng with them was often sheer terror.
The problem with an IQ test is it tests your knowledge of what you've been taught, well not really it tests your knowledge of what the test writer assumes you have been taught. You can take a child, almost any child and teach it exactly what the test will ask and voila you have a high IQ student. But the practical ability may well not meet the expectations. The teaching style of the Asians and people of various other countries fit this model and yield good results. But we still don't know if in fact the children are smarter or simply trained dogs. I find it interesting that in the 60's and 70's Japan began mass marketing motorcycles to the West but for many of these motorcycles they were simply cheap copies of existing technologies often including the worst features (i.e. the outside oil lines of English motorcycles). During the 70's and 80's the Japanese and mainland Asia began marketing earth moving equipment to the west but they again were cheap copies of Caterpillar equipment. Odd, isn't it for the worlds smartest people to have to copy us ignorant Westerners. Now havng said that I would agree that the Japanese for example have made improvements in cars and motorcycles that our system failed to make. But this too speaks to their obsessive nature as demonstrated by their schools and the tiger moms. Not saying it is a bad thing, I like having 8 cupholders and three cigarette lighter outlets in my vehicles. But again is it a result of greater intelligience or greater OCD.
The bottom line is you can raise your kid's or ur own IQ (as tested). There are tutors and classes that will teach you the tests. You could sit with your children for four hours everyday and do the job our schools fail to do. You can send your children to private schools that have a reputation for success. Knowing this I come back to the question of is the IQ of Asian's higher or is their education system better or do they simply train them in the same way you train an animal to perform? I do not know. It could be all of these things. I do know that the answer is more complex then it appears.
Dress Code: Go with common sense, they say. We all wish common sense was still common, having gone un-common some years back.
The Black Panthers were not a self-defense group. Still aren't.
Tech Training--Keep the people poor means more gummint power.
Common-sense menu labelling? Not sufficiently complicated--less chance to find fault and impose outrageous fines.
When people pay for the "arts" , they have some consideration for quality and beauty. Gummint bureaucrats don't. Likely wouldn't know it if they saw it.
Neoreaction: Reads to me like somebody is messing with other people's minds, and likely having a fun time with it.
Paycheck-to-Paycheck: Is there any reason I should believe TIME? Does the side column link to SLATE's "Snow Didn’t Paralyze Atlanta. Racism Did." give me confidence in either magazine/website? Well, NO.
Raaaaacism: The Left is convinced that anyone not a leftie is ipso facto a raaaaacist, and can't have that article of faith countered by actual facts.
Energy woes: Same thing as Raaaaacism.
I don't think Pat Buchanan has a lock on truth or sanity, but there is some of that in his column. Maybe up towards a lot.
When race riot meant a mob of hate-filled whites attacking the ghetto, the NAACP backed gun rights. When White Girl Bleed a Lot, NAACP opposes gun rights.
The NAACP looks after the interests of its members. That is its sole goal. As with all groups, any justice or truth in their claims and agendas is accidental and contingent.
Regarding subsidizing sports and art...
Jewel and art thefts (the big ones, like in movies and TV) shouldn't be investigated by the law enforcement folks (local, state or fed). Let the insurance companies pay for the investigations. Then, allow them to present their findings to the appropriate grand jury. Don't spend a lot of public money on the investigation and pursuit of the perpetrators.
and how this is done without powers of subpoena or arrest?
