We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Winter comfort food: Bread Pudding and Bird's Custard

My favorite winter puddings are Indian Pudding, Bread Pudding, and Plum Pudding (with hard sauce, please).


Bread Pudding is the easiest to make.


All of these puddings require something to be served on top. For Bread Pudding, I've seen Rum Sauce, Lemon Sauce, Vanilla Sauce, etc etc.


Or the old standby, English Custard Sauce. No need to make it yourself - you can buy Bird's at Amazon. Ol' Mr. Bird invented it because his wife had an egg allergy. A bird, allergic to eggs...


God made pitchers for pouring custard.

Bird's! Yes! My parents are both British. We all live, however, in Pennsylvania. Bird's is all we use for custard 'round this place, for everything and anything that calls for a really good custard. It's very cool that you featured it in you post.

I ate a lot of bread pudding as a kid but it was because we were poor not because it was great food. I've had some that was pretty good and some that was only filling. It's been at least 55 years since I last had bread pudding and I haven't missed it. I don't feel that way about all of the peasant food I ate as a child, some of it I stlll enjoy.

This is a good recipe I will save for later--right now it's "Apple Pie Season" and I try to do about 2/month for the dark days of winter.
Keeps DH hopeful and that's important!

I spend every summer putting up a bunch of pie fillings - apple, plum, pear, peach, cherry, berry and a few mixed ones. They're tasty and make for a fast dessert or breakfast, if you mix up a quick crumble topping, sprinkle it on top and pop it in the oven until it's all golden and bubbling. We've been eating a lot of those this winter.

Up here in the "Great White North", we use Bird's as a filling for Nanaimo Bars. Try them.

Homemade vanilla ice cream. Ice cubes complementary of my horse's water buckets that freeze and require constant removal.

Unfortunately dropping the buckets to remove the ice leads to replacing a lot of broken buckets..

ingredients required: eggs, cream or 1/2 and 1/2, whole milk, Sugar, vanilla.
Ice cubes and salt.
