Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

But in all of America’s most successful groups, people tend to feel insecure, inadequate, that they have to prove themselves. Nothing sparks court challenges like trying to expand education options. In regards to NYC, I find it interesting that just as NYC is headed for, shall we say, change, that some channels on cable, Sundance for one, have started playing the original Law and Orders (1990). I liked those earlier ones and sometimes wondered why with L&O running 24/7 that they never aired them.
The old episodes are grittier and show a very different NYC. Street crime fears pervade the scenes. I notice on one a lot scattered with garbage and old mattresses. Graffiti that goes unacknowledged on the front of buildings. And the stories attack perceived racism, homosexuality, even BDSM with real debate. Inequality is on every protestors tongue. It'll be interesting to see if NYC becomes to backdrop for such gripping stories again. Even the minor scenes are informative. In one they had a fire inspector re-inspecting buildings as they went after a corrupt building inspector. They fire inspector's whole scene was mostly about how their was competition between fire and buildings to generate the most income for the city with fines. He's proud of bringing in the bucks. When challenged, he tells the detectives, where do you think your last raise came from. The Australasian Antarctic Expedition looks like some kind of modern day Children's Crusade. Just religious zeal combined with pure crazy. Too bad they won't be sold into slavery along the way.
Regarding the pitiful manner in which the humanities are presented to students in the contemporary government controlled schools; it's a darn shame. Seeing as the works of Shakespeare are probably the best source of wisdom about human nature in the English language, no real education of any sort can proceed without substantial exposure to them. Early modern English I should probably say. Having the King Jame's Bible drilled into my thick head for all of my formative years gave me an edge with Shakespeare. That advantage was not shared by many of my contemporaries even way back then. So, instead of trying to tackle the slightly challenging language barrier, the schools decided to dumb it down or eliminate it altogether. After all, we can't burden 'teachers' with a challenge or expose students to any real wisdom. And heaven forbid we assign Bible reading for homework. That would mean the end of civilization. Much better we have everyone believe in diversity. Lifestyle choices don't matter except for the importance of elevating sterile relationships above all others with special legal protections and forced indoctrination. The thug life is worthy of emulation and pimping is cool. The special 'minorities' can even preach and engage in violence and that is OK. It's funny that this strange version of nihilism, if I can call it that, has come to pass. But, without Shakespeare, what can we expect?
It is an interesting article regarding tenure. But, alas it does not reveal the true evil: professors searching for jobs who are known to be the leading edge in a humanities field, but are not part of a particular social network. They are invited in to be "distinguished scholars" for a year and they earn a nice check for a year. But, then they are asked for their syllabus, course outlines, and contacts. Then they are sent home. And, the lazy half assed bastards who have tenure--what do you think they do? Let met spell it out for you. They take the syllabus, the course outline, and the contacts and use them to "re-design" a new course, or a new curriculum, and in many cases an entire department--holding themselves out as experts. By the way they are the faculty members whose Curriculum Vitae no longer names their doctoral thesis, or the degrees which they have received on their own scholarship. Nope those are the women and white castratos whose job security gives them a license to steal. I have one email from a woman at the UW who wrote to tell me DH to come in and review a speech she was going to give discussing his field of expertise--the reason she needed to use a man looking for a job--she HAD NO EXPERIENCE in the field she was going to talk about! The abuse is never ending--because there is tenure without the discipline of a system of values. Then there is the group of women for whom my husband refused to work--because I refused to let him continue in their nuthouse. He had been department chair for 12 years without tenure (contract renewed every year). When they broke the contract by trying to put the chancellor's wife into DH position and holding him to write research grants--we left! Not very nice people these folks from a particular "village". However, what has been so evil is they have stalked us for 14 years. They have refused to allow him to get a job, they have interrogated my 80 year old mother in the retirement home. They have stalked me and followed me to conferences, they have contacted all of our neighbors. They have done that--because they are a protected group! No attorney will confront women or men from this powerful group.
If you but admit that you and/or your husband (archaic sexist model) have been trapped between honesty and tradition, you can be forgiven. Admit that your true identity as transgender poly-sexual humans has been repressed by your suppressed memories of abuse by Christians and Jews and you will be forgiven.

This drives me crazy. Even my most radical friends and acquaintances are like this, though the may make costly gesture - a badge of public virtue - like buying an electric car when a gas-powered car would have been much cheaper. Then they preen, though discretely. Further, each and all of them that have children raise them in a traditional family structure with mostly traditional family expectations of how their children should behave. As for the Humanities, Politics has driven what's human out. That's what happens when you make everything that is or could be personal, political. Politics is power, and power is not subtle. It makes for crude art and thought. The Humanities have become mere propaganda. School Choice: It's anti-Union, anti-Educrat...ANATHEMA!

It is tragic that political indoctrination is now a more important requirement for earning a degree than studying the classics. |
