Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

It's a return to the cash medical care market, which is a good thing.
Not everybody got charged the same price. Doctors adjusted. Everybody got care. Insurance on the other hand gets you a ticket to the official waiting room with the drain in the floor. The Healthcare Shuffle is the dance of this decade. It will take years for the healthcare administrators, docs, nurses, physician assistants, med tech support system, hospitals, research and teaching institutions, employers and purchasers to untangle the mess Obama and Friends have created.
When my husband was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer many years ago, our regular docs at a well-known teaching hospital wouldn't touch it. After many, many calls (pre-Internet), I found ONLY two hospitals that recognized his disease and could treat him, one in California and one in Chicago, both fortunately on our network. With our premier medical centers no longer available on most restructured insurance programs, how is this benefitting our citizens? And what about the tertiary-care systems for pediatrics? Plus, with an increase of coverage comes a shortage of providers; how is this going to keep people out of the ERs? It won't. Back at square one, aren't we? Defund Obamacare and start over. (It would be nice if the government could shave off some of the Medicaid/Medicare fraud before expanding the system. I resent paying for healthcare for Russian diplomats!) Re: Floppy disks in the US Giverment
You mean they only use floppy disks in one department? I'm impressed! I thought at least 10% of the giverment was run using sneakernet! I guess we have Algore to thank for that. Since he invented the Internet, he must have been the driving force in IT modernization. "10-year old Johnny Jones suspended for shooting imaginary arrow"
or, in other words, School administrators imagine they are competent and not abusing children Imagine there's an arrow, and you let it fly Your "teachers" all panic You can't imagine why You tell them to calm down That it was just a thought But they cannot fight the fever Of what they were taught To them a thought is terrible Beyond comprehension So with their dictatorial powers They hand you a suspension Imagine your are in the hands of idiots It's easy if you try Just judge them by their actions What's hard to imagine is why I suspect the government will force doctors to accept insurance from the exchanges, before too long. As it becomes apparent this is going to limit choice even more than the government has already done so, the government will seek to 'expand' choice by diktat.
You mean, like the mandated price-fixing of the 70's.
Yep, that worked out swimmingly, IRRC... What happens when there's a doctors strike as happens elsewhere? As the Klingons would say, "it will be glorious".
In Belgium, in the 1950's or 60's (whenever they socialized medicine) the doctors went on strike.
So they were all drafted into the army. The details may be somewhat hazy, but that's what I recall. Its nice to see the greenies and their magic pin-wheels destroy their 'protect the species' manta...
What's the old phrase - Hoist upon their own petards...?? With regard to the 'lousy jobs', it is a shame that the new job market is so downscale.
However, it's fair to say we need MANY MORE of these jobs, and it wouldn't hurt if the minimum wage was either removed or lowered to help accommodate more of them. Plenty of people may be making less than $20k a year, but we shouldn't be blind to certain facts about these people: 1. Most are probably teens or young adults living at home 2. Few are raising families and rely on only 1 income 3. Many have little to no training or education, and would otherwise be collecting benefits, so this is a good starting point for them. 4. Many are part-time, or flex-time, or temp workers. 5. Many are taking their first job, or second job, and are looking to move up. Most of these jobs are not careers, merely stepping-stones or placeholders. When I was unemployed, I took one of these jobs and deferred payment until my unemployment ran out (or I got a job). When I finally started working again, I got a nice lump sum check. These jobs are not horrible, they are necessary and needed and for some reason we, as a nation, try to belittle them and get rid of them. Fact is, we could use more people WILLING TO DO this kind of work. Yesterday The Barrister posted a link to Mike Rowe making a comment about 'following your passion' and what a crock it is. I was speaking with a friend of mine who runs his own maintenance company, and he agreed. As he said: "I hate what I do, it's dirty and it's hard work. I usually wake up at 4am and I'm on top of my workers until 8pm. I'm out earlier and in later if it snows. But it's my company, it pays me and the workers well, and I am responsible for 50 people. I finally have good people in place and am starting to set my own hours, and now I'm looking for ways to grow and expand. But if I had my choice, there are plenty of other jobs I'd rather do, except I'd have to work for someone else, and I could never do that." This guy has a pilot's license, and has managed a building owned by Donald Trump. It's not like he doesn't know what he's talking about. But when he had the chance to start his own company, he did. Some of the people who work for him are people earning less than $20k a year, but that's the kind of work he handles - stuff nobody else wants to do. "When I was unemployed, I took one of these jobs and deferred payment until my unemployment ran out (or I got a job)."
Wait, what? You collected unemployment while working? If you are working at all (it doesn't matter when you get paid) you should not be collecting unemployment (or if a part-time job the amount you earn should be deducted from your unemployment benefit). That's the way unemployment works in most states. Sorry, Bulldog; but, if you worked while collecting unemployment it sounds like fraud to me. Depends on hours worked and amount paid, as well as when the compensation is delivered. Plenty of factors which come into play.
I was very careful to not commit fraud, reviewed it all with the company lawyers. Even so, I know plenty of people who work under the table while collecting unemployment. I have no problem with this, however fraudulent it is or may seem. The concept of unemployment preventing people from taking any kind of work is insane to me. A better concept is that you should be allowed to work and collect up to a given amount of income, relative to your region. In some nations, unemployment insurance operates as a "topping up" situation where you work and collect, and the amount you collect declines over time so you can get used to a lower pay scale situation. Our current unemployment scheme is so skewed, it's an incentive for many people to NOT work. I know two-income families where both earners were unemployed, one went back to work while the other remained unemployed and collecting. When Obama extended benefits, this was an incentive for the second worker to NOT LOOK. So, regardless of how fraudulent or amoral or unethical anyone considers this - I say the system causes the behavior we tend to dislike, and I don't blame the people. With regards to the Johnny Jones case, you have to understand what these policies are all about. It's not to protect the students. It's to indoctrinate the students that weapons of any kind are evil under any circumstances. They are not only not to possess them, they are to be punished for even thinking about owning them.
In addition, it is intended to get children to turn in parents who have a gun.
Poor Johnny. I'm buying my 10 year old daughter a compound bow for Christmas. She wants to kill a deer. Bless her heart!
MSNBC host equates ‘Obamacare’ with N-word. Panicked libs are a hoot.
"Why Hillary will lose again".
It depends on who the Republicans nominate. If they decide to nominate the next old Senator in line for the presidency before he dies then Hillary will win easily. McCain was a stupid self-defeating choice but somehow the elite Republicans thought that was a good idea. Romney was reasonably competent and a truely nice guy but he was nominated at a time when we needed a statesman, someone with vision and chrisma not just another mediocre politician. I personally liked George Bush but thought he was so middle of the road and too willng to go along with the Democrats that he did us more harm then good. There aren't any "good" Republican potential candidates. If some new face doesn't come out of the mists I suspect we will have Obama in a pantsuit for the next president. We also need to stop illegal voting. In some areas it is outrageous that the number of votes cast for Obama exceeded the census, only exposed because of turnout. And gerrymandering is out of control in many districts. Take a look at some of the maps.
I have worked in poll watching since the Kennedy/Nixon days, and I can tell you, those votes for Kennedy in key areas were bagged and ready to go weeks in advance. It hasn't changed and, in fact, is simply more sophisticated and undetectable. Are there any "good" Democratic candidates? I don't think so. Just evil ways of electing them. Scott Walker is looking pretty good. Not excellent, but good.
Now is not the time to emerge. Still have the mid terms and the media is looking for someone to attack. Walker is under attack as some on the Left see his threat. I suspect we'd have to look at the under-reported speeches and talks that are occurring under the radar of most the DC (Rep and Dem) crowd. We have lots of friends and relatives in Wisconsin, most running their own companies. They were having multiple problems getting anything done business-wise before his election and several thought of leaving the state. Now, all is going swimmingly. They love his leadership and the people he's put in charge of various departments and agencies. They are cutting the bureaucracy, which can be critical to a smaller business surviving.
My first thought on Hillary is: young people don't know who she is and don't remember when Clinton was president. She will be almost 70 when she runs. To people under 30, she will seem old and out of touch. She does not have the 'shine' to younger liberals that she once did after Bill left office.
I think someone younger will be able to garner a better following with the millenial liberals. Also, I think what the democrats fail to think about is the stink of Obama that will be on Hillary when she is attempting to run. Her tenure as Sec'y of State was pretty horrible and under a president that is losing more and more supporters every day. re If Pearl Harbor happened now
I have wondered if that would be our reaction to a surprise attack since 9/11. Perhaps the Japs just attacked 60 or 70 years too soon? I would not be a bit surprised if we were quick to throw in the towel under similar circumstances today. I don't believe the young people by and large have the stomach for a fight and now our political masters have too much to loot to let a little old war get in the way. The bird people don't allow enough for graft and cronyism.
Why should I trust the jobs report? Anyone? Buehler? Soldiers d/n save the art from Hitler, they rescued it from Hitler's forces. We'll need someone to vote for, not just to vote against Hillary!. Funding education is not "for the kids" after the teachers' unions and educrats skim--skim is totally insufficient to describe how much they get--off what they want. Hate "crime" fighters have so little business they have to make up their own. Bumnmmmmmmmer! MSNBC doing God's work! Hiring the mentally handicapped! Putin and the press: Anyone surprised he wants to own it? Anyone surprised our press just signed on as Barry's slaves? re The bird people don't allow enough for graft and cronyism.
That is the only conclusion I can come to as well, Sam. Look at all the ways there are to generate electricity versus all the effort that has been made to preserve the eagles. The fact that windmill energy production trumps the survival of a species surprised me. And I am reading the California Condors have been struck down by windmills as well. One wonders how the debate on windmills vs eagles has played out on the Left? I can only speculate that the old adage, "Money talks, bullshit walks." applies. Perhaps the solution is to pay the windmill operators NOT to produce electricity. The Gov't subsidizes their implementation so why not subsidize idling them? Makes sense in our Alice in Wonderland world. I am sorry for the eagles. If the little people were killing them like this they would be going to prison. How much economic activity has been hamstrung or eliminated because of the ESA? I guess it is only important to the Left when THEY are not inconvienienced. And it boggles my feeble mind that they can so easily circumvent it. The left always considered that the environmental issues were merely a hammer to bludgeon the right with. It is used to redistribute money, to stop capitalism and progress and to win elections. It has no place in stopping the left wing agenda.
If Obomacare chaos is a feature not a bug then Oboma has made a bet that the voters will buy the line that it's the insurance companies fault and look to the Feds for a final solution. That is a risky bet as it seems the meme actually playing out is that the government is incompetent.
bomb meet face...bang If you did not believe before that the Jewish community is above the law--you certainly should give it some consideration today in regard to the Mayor of San Diego's sentence. If that had been a non-Jewish, straight, white male the sentence would have been much different. If the leaders of the Jewish community are truly smart and truly dedicated to justice they will start to understand that the best way to maintain a good favor with the community they live amongst, is to not hold themselves always above the law.
In past history we see on several occasions where the larger community has grown tired of their "chosen ones"claim and forced them out. I know of no one who wants that to happen, but feelings are growing every day and their leaders and our attorneys must come to that realization. Funny part of all of this is that he was: a. a democrat b. the prosecuting attorneys were white women (no surprise there) c. that the white women who brought action against him (his victims) were also members of the democratic liberated female party--I wonder how this all works out for them? Probably better job within the party!! sheesh! Shall we start calling the Unaffordable Care Act, ObmanibleCare?
