Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

If NYC were a nation...

...it would be the 13th largest economy in the world.


Quite remarkable, really. It could be like Singapore or Hong Kong, or something, but much bigger, I guess. It is odd that such a thriving metropolis would elect a Commie mayor. Something in the water, maybe. Sure, it's expensive, but that's supply and demand. There is high demand to be here. Sometimes it feels like the whole world wants to move here, despite the living challenges and the fierce, if invigorating, competition.


I will ask one more time: "Why don't all the ardent Lefties who love living in this terrible, capitalistic, and thriving NYC move to Portland, Oregon? Better yet, Mexico City, Havana or Managua."

I live within the broadcast area of NYC - so it doesn't seem odd to me at all. Suicidal, but not odd.

The problem is most good people won't run for public office especially the high profile offices. It subjects you to a public anal exam and a target shooting of your reputation. We will continue to get bad people running for office and elected as long as we allow the political machines to destroy the good people.

This happens because the influential people who could prevent it from happening know that corruption runs deep and they expect to buy off such politicians. It's a shakedown/protection racket they've decided they can afford. They are making so much money, hand over fist, the bribes and political payoffs come straight out of petty cash. It's money that's lost in the round-off.

How much of NYC is based on making things and how much is based on cronyism and living off the Federal Reserve's pumping of monies into the money system. Shut that spigot off and see what happens.

Somewhat related to Bulldog's "Diverse" post - that is a large part of how he won; see, even though he is white, his wife is black and his children are biracial - that's how many New Yorkers (and many Americans as well) vote thesedays. They vote by how "diverse" someone is.

And when (not if, WHEN) he fails and the city goes downhill, the Dems will simply find a scapegoat whether it be the evil Wall Streeters, the bridge and tunnel crowd, the penthouse folks, or some other "evil and greedy" entity doesn't matter. It simply won't be his fault; cannot possibly be his fault - 'cause, you know, he is "diverse" and all that.

P.S. Manhattan is expensive, not just due to supply and demand. Somebody has to subsidize all those rent-controlled apartments. One person pays $3,000 for a studio because someone else's adult grandkids live in the long dead grandmother's rent-controlled 2-bedroom apartment for under $500. Totally do away with rent control and watch the free market supply affordable housing for Manhattanites. And let the moochers move to Queens for those cheaper rentals.
