We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"a one-off tax on private wealth—as an exceptional measure to restore debt sustainability". This has been the left wing wet dream forever. The problem is even if you confiscated all the wealth in this country there wouldn't be enough to even pay for one year of Obama's borrowing. Make no mistake they want it anyway and no doubt will find some way to follow through on this socialst dream but it won't fix anything and certainly won't go to reduce the debt. Higher taxes will result in higher spending which will be just as unsustainable as our present level of spending resulting in even greater deficits. There is only one thing that could "fix" our economy at this point; a liberal use of the guillotine on our political elite. But our politicians are far smarter then the royalty was in 18th century France. Not only do they let us eat cake they provide the cake, money, free healthcare, housing, drugs, cell phones, etc. Our poor live pretty well for their level of industriousness and our middle class will just have to work harder to keep that lifestyle good enough to prevent them from rioting.
Lower their income? No, people will just do more off-book transactions.
Irony would be to have the amount your subsidized insurance costs' to be higher than the amount you are allowed to earn in order to get the subsidized insurance.
