We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
[sarcasm]Racial preferences are fair. In Soviet parlance, however, we should reinforce success. Racial preferences should be given to high-achieving races: Jews, Asians, Whites to increase our social productivity. Preferences are wasted on underachievers.[/sarcasm]
I’ll believe people are serious about racial and sexual preferences when affirmative action is applied to STEM. And the over-representation of certain groups in sports, arts, and fashion is corrected. And….
We should insist on a rigid quota system for all organizations, public and private, using race/ethnicity, gender/sexual orientation, religious affiliation (or none), political affiliation, IQ, physical handicaps, sanity and anything you can think of. The federal government would develop a data base that classifies each individual along each of these criteria and issue identification cards with the individuals classifications, photograph and thumb print.
Each organization would have to satisfy the quota system among its employees, and students in the case of schools.
So, the women's studies department at Harvard (faculty, staff and students separately) would have to be by law 50% male, 40% conservative, 20% liberal, 40% moderate, 30% Catholic, 60% protestant, 2% Jewish, 3% Muslim, 2% atheist, 2% homosexual, 98% heterosexual, 70% white, 13% hispanic, 12 % black, 5% other, average IQ 100 (not more than 16% above 115 or below 85), 10% crazy, x% crippled, etc.
The crazy quota would actually reduce the number of crazy people in the department and in schools and colleges in general.
The same for every other department and each sport at Harvard. If a department or sport is too small for a complete representation of the population, then the quotas apply at the college level.
In order to eliminate income and legacy bias, all admissions to every college in the country would be by federal lottery, and the winners would be assigned at random to the different schools subject to the condition that the quotas are met.
The quotas also extent to professional and amateur sports, businesses, the military, the Congress and state legislatures, civic associations (Boy Scouts et al), etc. So the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS and NHL would have to be 50% male, 50% female, 70% white, 13% hispanic, etc. No excuses.
Under this system no one has any grounds for complaint.
Older readers will remember that South Africa once did a partial implementation of this plan.
"Sadly, it will probably take blacks longer than that to completely overcome nearly four centuries of oppression. "
I suppose that's true if you can find 400 year old former slaves who are still alive today, but I doubt such a sweeping claim for living African-Americans could meet "strict scrutiny" on any grounds, legal or otherwise. Within 100 years of its founding, America formally made slavery illegal. Within 100 years of formally abolishing slavery, America made racial discrimination illegal. We are now half a century---half a century!---beyond that point in time, and yet we condone the use of affirmative action to promote reverse discrimination? The SCOTUS created this legal disaster when it failed to heed the written words of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The Court needs at long last to show the courage to repudiate its past mistakes. But after this Court, under John Roberts, failed to strike down the punitive ACA health care law, I hold out no hope it will happen within my lifetime.
Never the less the punishment of those who never owned slaves but are guilty of living in America while white must continue so we can give "free stuff" to people who were never slaves who have no other claim except black privilage. Slavery is indeed a sad story. But it is a historical story of almost every continent and every people and not just a story of America. Slaves where captured in Africa mostly by blacks who sold them to Arabs who in turn sold them to ship captains from European countries who carried them to the new world and dumped them in countries that didn't even have governments yet. The slave trade in the Americas was more like the illegal drug trade then it was like the picture people like to paint when they rewrite history. 95% of white Americans never owned slave but 100% of white Americans today must pay for crimes someone no one even knows who committed hundreds of years ago. Makes sense to me!
Africa is the original home of the human race. Europe wasn’t settled until 35,000 years ago. Africa should be the most developed, most prosperous, most humane of continents, and Europe the most backward (of the two). Blacks haven’t had four centuries of oppression, but millennia of opportunity to prosper, millennia other peoples have not had.
American abolished slavery in 1865. Saudi Arabia in 1962. Europe in 1991. China…, we’re still waiting.
Don't you get it? The Constitution is a dead letter. SCOTUS has always, from the git-go, operated to enhance the powers of the federal government against the people and the States, and the Justices will fabricate any fantasy needed to do so.
