We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Depending on how you define "rich" the U.S. and Canada are the best countries in the world for people to achieve upper middle class which by historic standards is pretty rich. The primary difficulty most in the West have that prevents them from becoming that rich is that most people want to spend like millionaires and not necessarily merely acquire a million in assets. I know a number of people who have recently gone bankrupt and without exception they all had purchased new BMW's or similar luxury cars as soon as they could qualify for the loan. One of my nieghbors just walked away from a very nice home letting it go into default but also just bought a new top of the line pickup truck. Most people cannot set reasonable priorities and pay the price for it.
