Chess sharks in Union Square yesterday evening

These guys will play you for money. Many of them prefer speed chess - 5-minute or even one-minute games. It's a wonderful thing, excellent mental exercise. I hear that these guys are savvy players.

There are a few checkers guys too, but isn't checkers too much like tic-tac-toe? If you start, you win or draw unless you make an error.

I don't think checkers has quite been solved yet, though there are some very good programs for it. More of that effort has gone into chess and Go, though neither is solved yet either.

In tic-tac-toe, if played perfectly, first mover does not win. The game is always a draw.

There was a tic-tac-toe playing chicken in Chinatown.

Calvin Trillin used to take friends there.

The friend surveys the situation.

"The chicken always goes first."

"Well, he's a chicken, and you're a human. He ought to go first."

After the game, the friend usually says, "The chicken plays every day. I haven't played for years."

Walked into a Country Buffet Restaurant (on a long road trip--they aren't so bad) It was dinner time and the place was crowded. A nice looking little boy about 9 years old I think. Was sitting at the checker board by himself, I asked politely if he would like to play and his divine little face lit up--"sure". He had me in three moves!
Dang that kid was good! Hope he can hold onto that--
