Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Women and alcohol abuse

Stop calling alcohol “MommyJuice”: How liquor companies target women


I don't think she is blaming the booze business for this. Women have always had their secret Mothers' Little Helpers, of one sort or another, since the beginning of time. Laudanum, alcohol, coca leaf, tobacco, areca nut and betel leaf, you name it - long before TV advertising and Mad Men.

The question is; is alcoholism a genetic thing or the result of the persons environment? It appears to be genetic.

There is no simple answer to that. Furthermore, personal flaws have genetic (wiring) components, but everybody has flaws.

I tried that hard lemonade. First went down quickly--no taste of alcohol. Second did, too, and then I felt it. Never had a third.
