We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

While you're at it, check out the description of our American colonists as "terrorists" for objecting to British taxation, etc. In fact, read your chldren's and grandchldren's textbooks. Some of the worst bunch of propaganda I've seen since I studied economics in college and Keynes was God.

My only question about the Navy Yard shooting is how did a shotgun get past security? Other than that the press (and various bloviators) lived up to low expectations.

Liberalism was never about live and let live but about live, let live as I say. In which they are no different than the taliban or concerned parents that want school dances banned.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria, evolution works. While more research on how we encourage it would be nice, Iowa pig farmers vote too in the caucus.

According to Piers Morgan and CNN it was an AR 15 shotgun.

Since those are invisible I suppose it would be rather easy to sneak past security.

Invisible perhaps but we know they believe they are magical.

As for the reality of the situation, I read that he assembled the shotgun in a restroom then shot his way through the building security. According to this he piggybacked through a secondary door used during rush hour that only used card swipe access. He was confronted but shot the guard and then a second guard responding to the gunshot.

Sounds about right. A momentary lapse in security.

Remembering a time in the 80's when someone got NJP for an ax handle in the gun rack of his POV at the Seabee base. It was spotted by the rent a cop at the gate, reported to MAA, etc. He almost lost a stripe.

Costa Concordia salvage nears final phase

Amazing bit of marine engineering from start to finish. First time ever a ship that big has been raised from a wreck site like this. History in the making.

This is going to become a standard technique in the future to protect sensitive environments and areas.

Hats off to the salvage crews and engineers.

I didn't see where Glenn actually suggested 'cleaning up' the IRS but rather that we had to get to the bottom of the scandal.

I agree with Glenn that we need to get to the bottom of it but I disagree that we have to clean up the IRS. We need to abolish the IRS. There is no place in a free society for a government agency that can bankrupt you without due process, compel you to essentially testify against yourself (on your income tax forms) in violation of the Fifth Amendment, or snoop through your financial records (in an audit) without a warrant in violation of the Fourth Amendment.

While there is much to blame Clinton for, it appears that he's not totally to blame for the gun free zone on military bases, at least according to an article on Glenn Beck's The Blaze:

I have no doubt that Clinton made the situation worse, but if that article is accurate, the start of that sorry situation began during Bush I's term and it just goes to show you that Republican does not mean Conservative.

The antibiotic story is more complicated then it is presented. Today antibiotics are manufactured by the megaton and shipped all over the world. Way more then half of it is not used for human consumption but for farm animals and pets. Of that portion that is intended for humans more then half of that is sent to third world countries where neither a doctor visit or prescription is needed to buy it. This actually makes sense in a country where the people cannot afford a doctor and where doctors are generally not available people resort to self help. Your child gets really sick you walk to the pharmacy and buy some antibiotics and give them to your child and they get better. Did they actually need antibiotics? Who know, who cares. But somehow the article seems to want to blame, wait for it... all the people in the U.S. for the antibiotic resistant germs. You have to wonder what the real agenda of this story is.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria started showing up almost as soon as we had antibiotics. The first I recall was streptomycin resistance in E. Coli in the late '40s or early '50s (can't recall exactly).

re anti-biotics:

They always want to make farm animal use the whipping boy for antibiotic resistance, but I don't know of any common farm animal bacterial infections that are contagious to humans. Over prescription by doctors and and incorrect useage by the patient is a far worse problem.

It is critical that patients take their antibiotics for the prescribed period even if they feel well, or the infection can come back with a vengeance, and with resistance. It is also important to stay off antibiotics when you don't need them or they may not work when you do.

Unfortunately this happens a lot. Doctors prescribe antibiotics without doing a culture because the patient wants them and they end up treating viruses with antibiotics, which is worse than useless.

Not finishing antibiotic treatments is probably why we have anti-biotic resistant TB today.

I don't have the answer for it. I don't see growing cultures being required before antibiotics are prescribed. I don't see medical personnel required to administer all antibiotic doses, and I don't see any way to force patients to show up for treatments, short of forced hospitalization. And I see no way to control the distribution of antibiotics world wide.

When you give antibiotics to ignorant people and allow them to self medicate, you are asking for resistant bacteria.

A final thought. For all the 10s of thousands that the NYT estimates die from infection each year, it is a tiny fraction of the number of people that would die without them and the millions that would suffer from chronic infections. Life is still better with them than without them.

Detroit: Not enough to just run people out of town (or give them reason to move) and lament the loss of tax money while spending more (and more, and more...). No, now they have to run off businesses, losing business taxes, employee's taxes, and get others asking "Just why the Hell am I living in Helltroit?"
