We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I believe Bird Dog and the missus have taken off for the famous Annual Two-Seed-In-The-Spirit Predestinarian Baptist Revival And Used Gun Sale in Woostah, Mass (only true New Englanders will know where that is), so I'm doing today's morning links.
First off, here's an official 'scoop' for ya. Sites like PJ Media and Hot Air are always linking to the latest Solyndra-type 'green' company going belly-up, with the most recent one being Ecotality, a maker of electric car charging stations. Here's a fresh one hot off the press:
That 'do nothing' link contains this gem:
So, if I'm reading the gist of the article correctly, it's better to be civic-minded than sit around playing video games. I think we can all agree with that sentiment.
Speaking of religions, here's a great article demolishing the whole 'sea levels rising' meme:
And two articles on the EPA's war on coal:
No, wait, I got that backwards. The Pope is asking Catholics not to get all worked up about such trivialities as abortion, gay marriage and contraception.
Since atheists are now included in the congregation, I presume he's talking about fringe groups like disenchanted Two-Seed-In-The-Spirit Predestinarian Baptists. Look out, Mr. & Mrs. Bird Dog — the Pope is gunning for you!
Speaking of religions, you might have read how the professional grievance-mongers want to do away with the Washington 'Redskins' name, because of its obvious horrific racist overtones. You know, along with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and, especially, the Cleveland Indians, because there's no more horrid and racist word for an American Indian to be called than 'Indian'.
Here's the best article I've read yet on the subject.
The last line of the article is one for the books.
Speaking of religions, the professional racemongers at CNN are still hard at work. After the Zimmerman trial, I noted CNN's top headline a few days later here. Well, an India-Indian woman won the Miss America pageant last weekend and a couple of lunatics came out of the woodwork making racist comments.
Blaring from the CNN headlines the next morning:
What's to note is that not one other news agency mentioned racism in their own articles that day. I'd be willing to bet even money that CNN staffers wrote a bunch of them in order to fit the preordained headline.
As I write in Of The Moon And Mushrooms, the mushroom in the above article, 'fly agaric', aka Amanita Muscaria, in conjunction with other natural phenomena, might have been the first building blocks of religion. Imagine all those Arizonans eating the things and inventing 225 new religions!
On the galactic scene, I mentioned this bad boy about six months ago and here's an update:
Think you have good eyes? Think you can spot a photoshopped picture when you see one? The following image of Putin and Obama is obviously photoshopped, but the question is, what obvious telltale sign gives it away?
President Obama rides sidesaddle.

"President Obama rides sidesaddle."
Zing! Between that and things like the cartoon yesterday, I'm afraid our president is not looking his best these days.
And the 'Redskins' article was terrific. I had no idea so many teams used the name -- especially teams in Indian neighborhoods. That really snapped the "so we'll be offended for you." line into focus.
And I sure hope the comet makes it around the sun. Needs a catchier name, though. Even something goofy like "Kohoutek" beats out "ISON". Go, big boy, go!
Indeed. The photoshop and the sidesaddle remark made my stop at Maggie's worthwhile this a.m. Definitely the highlight of a good overall post.
I saw that CNN headline last Monday and had exactly the same thought. These guys just can't quit. The Redskins article was great. I also didn't know that many teams used the name. Every time you think the ideology of Political Correctness has hit a wall, they come up with something new, whether the "victims" agree or not.
And I sure hope the comet makes it. That would be just fantastic. Go, big boy, go!
Worcester! (do I get a prize?) Actually a lovely little city, lived there for about a year, years ago.
I tend to be agnostic and don't think about religion very much, but I'm starting to feel for the world's Catholics. Catholicism has traditionally been the 'last bastion of morality,' and the Pope's turning it into a joke. Seriously, welcoming atheists into the fold? I've heard of "reaching out", but that raises it to new heights. Or lowers it to new lows.
Maybe they should follow Colorado's lead and have a recall election.
"do I get a prize?"
Of course! Your reward is a big, wet, slobbery kiss on the cheek from the blogger of your choice! (If you pick Dr. Bliss, I'm going to feel very insulted.) And it is a cute place. When I was living in the adorable hamlet of New Hampshire, we used to go down there occasionally cuz a friend had family there.
"Maybe they should follow Colorado's lead and have a recall election."
HONK! Hadn't thought of that. You can bet at this very moment some Cardinal's aide is feverishly poring over ancient texts looking for a precedent.
Let's just tell Dan Snyder to rename his "Redskins" the "National Capital Native Americans". "Hail to the NCNAs, Hail vic-to-ry!"
That would be hilarious. (In case you hadn't guessed, I'm not a Redskins fan.)
In any event, Reilly's comment about "white America being offended" is spot-on.
"to rename his "Redskins" the 'National Capital Native Americans'."
That's pretty funny. You can picture the cheerleaders leading a cheer:
"Gimme an N!"
"Gimme an A!"
(five minutes later)
"Finally, gimme an S!"
"What's that spell??"
"Damned if I know!"
"Look, a squirrel!"
Just seems to be missing something.
I don't think the Pope actually said athiests will be able to go to heaven. I read his letter (translated in English) where he talks about the non believer acting in accordance with his conscience. He is different. He's trying to be a force in the world, similar to the Polish guy.
I think the uproar over a few tweets about Miss America is way overblown. The problem is that the Miss America Pageant went PC years ago and they no longer pick a "beautiful" Miss America they pick one intended to please some and not please others. I'm not saying their latest pick is not beautiful, she is, or not worthy, because I don't know if she was the best. What I am saying is Miss Kansas was probably the most beautiful contestant I have ever seen and had a lot of other things going for her and was passed over. Was it political correctness? No way to know really. Some people think so and expressed their opinions and some went over that undefinable red line. But in focusing on the uproar over where the red line is we miss the point. Could Miss Kansas have won? What she had against her was she was white, blond, heterosexual, in the military, beautiful and self confident. What the Miss America Board wanted was to make a statement. Next year they will select a Latino, the year after that a lesbian, the following year a disabled women of color, etc. But this year they passed up one of the most beautiful women to ever compete and some people suspect there is an agenda at work.
They should re-name the Skins, The Washington Leeches, Ignorant Obama Sycophants and Useless Bureaucrats. Try getting that on a jersey.
"Gimme a Leeches!"
"Gimme an Ignorant!"
Yeah, I don't think that one's gonna work, either. :)
Pope and abortion...anyone have the Anchoress link. the one to the left (theanchoressonline dot com) no longer works. wonder what she thinks about this.
"I think the uproar over a few tweets about Miss America is way overblown"
If I had more coffee I'd dig up the link, but an enterprising blogger elsewhere started tracking down the "tweets" from CNN - turned out the first 5 were from a new/just opened account...
It (the twitter "campaign") was PR claptrap. Nothing more.
BTW, those of us with real aboriginal DNA who are NOT offended? Our opinion on the 'skins thing seemingly doesen't matter - I had a WaPo Sports personality dismiss my POV as a "stupid comment from someone not knowing what effected (sic) him".
Well, if we're pushing for our favorite teams, allow me to say, "Go National Capital Native American Leeches, Ignorant Obama Sycophants and Useless Bureaucrats, go!"
Those cheerleaders are gonna be BUSY!
Mrs Jorg says, "I'll bet Putin is saying 'Hey! Dude! This is an English saddle, and that's not a saddle horn!'"
Also, the y should keep the name Redskins and have a potato as their mascot. [Mrs Jorg do love her some redskin potatoes.]
Tell Mrs. Jorg to take two Official Maggie's Farm Bonus Points out of petty cash for her great comment.
As for the redskin potatoes, that's brilliant! It solves everything!
Do you not know that riding sidesaddle is rather more difficult and hard on the body than either English or Western riding? Especially hard on the back. So I personally find the whole sidesaddle taunt absurd and embarrassing for the taunters, in their apparent ignorance.
You're obviously not from the United States. In this culture, sidesaddle is what girls do. The 'difficulty' is irrelevant.
But thanks for playing, just the same.
Kind of like the great molasses flood in Boston about 100 years ago. They say on really warm days you can still smell the molasses in the old buildings in the North end.
Are they Amillenial Two-Seed-In-The-Spirit Predestinarian Baptists, or Postmillenial Two-Seed-In-The-Spirit Predestinarian Baptists? Important to know this, because it may determine whether or not I continue to read Maggie's Farm. I cannot abide heresy in any way, shape or form!
A very good question. In glancing over my notes, however, I might have made a mistake.
They might be Zoroastrian.
When I get the chance, I'll try to squeeze the answer out of BD, but you know how private he is.
He might deny the whole thing.
The Putin photo: I don't see anything obvious. But look at the shadow angle from the horses' two left hooves. They don't seem to match.
Miss America: today there will be some discontent about anything. And media will stress it and the web will spread it. I doubt beauty or talent has much to do with winning. The purpose of the Miss America pageant is to continue. It is a curiosity and always has been.
American Indians: How silly to worry about a geography mistake made centuries ago. the short-lived belief that Columbus had nearly reached India by sailing west.
Redskins: I never really understood the term, they never looked red to me, nor do Japanese look yellow, etc. Maybe artists had to mix in red pigment to get an accurate portrait, or mix in some yellow for the same reason.
European artists would have been accustomed to mixing paints to match the skin of Europeans. Painting people from other lands would have required some changes.
That's two religions that (apparently) now say I can get into Heaven without being one of theirs. The Mormons got there first (they can pray you in even after you're dead).
Which means that at least those of us whose main motivation to (maybe someday) get a religion is to avoid hell need no longer worry about those two faiths. Pascal's Wager may still apply to a bunch of others, but there's no longer any reason to be a Mormon or Catholic unless you would enjoy being one.
I wonder if that means those faiths will want to offer new kinds of goodies to people for joining them. The mind reels.
